North Korea & Iran Mig-29 decals

Recommended Posts

The first Global Air Power Series sheets (Pakistani JF-17) were a big success; so the series will continue. I have a Pakistani F-16 sheet ready to go, but I didn't want to release two PAF sheets in a row (sorry, signals!). So here is the next Global Air Power Series sheet: Mig-29s from North Korea (DPRK) and Iran.

The North Korean (DPRK) markings might as well be the first accurate DPRK markings for the Mig-29. These markings were made possible by the Kim Jong Un photos that were released around the beginning of this year. The markings are for bort number 553, which bears an inscription commemorating the inspection of this aircraft by Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung.

The second option is for IRIAF Mig-29 number 3-6133, which was displayed earlier this year with a large eagle's head on its tail to commemorate the 20th year of Mig-29 operations in Iran. It will also be possible to build a twin-seater: I will include alternative serial number decals for Mig-29UB numbered 3-6305, which also carries the same tail art.

This sheet will be available to ship in the first week of August. I plan to release a 1/48 sheet, and a combo 1/72 & 1/32 sheet. The sheet will follow the same Global Air Power Series concept: at most two options on a sheet, countries typically not covered by anyone else, limited run, priced less than $10.

Here is a draft. I am still working on some of the markings, and will post the sheet layout early next week.

I normally don't enable preordering until a week or so before the delivery date from the printer; so it's not possible to preorder this. If you're not on my mailing list, please sign up at the Web site so you can get a reminder when it's ready.

This particular DPRK Fulcrum is a 9.12b, so I was planning to recommend the Italeri kit. There really are no complex curves on this sheet that would require me to fit the markings to a particular kit, so any early (9.12) Mig-29 kit should work.

I am about to send this to the printers this weekend. If everything goes according to the plan, August will be a pretty spectacular month with five new releases.

Here is what the 48scale sheet looks like, and 1/72 will be pretty much identical.

I am still somewhat undecided about the 1/32 version; it is increasing the cost a little bit more than I hoped.

You will give any information about the colors for the North Korean Mig, Kursada?

Obviously the instructions will have color information. Unfortunately the North Koreans are not very open about publishing their color standards (if there is any), so I will provide the closest FS colors I could match to the photos.

Everyone says the best MiG-29A kit out there is the Italeri one, I am guessing that would be the one he recommends, but I bet there is no problem using another MiiG-29A kit.

From what i have found searching around the web, the consensus seems to be that the ICM kit has the best overall shape.

From my understanding is that north Korea flies the MiG-29A, while the icm one is a later version of the MiG-29.

The best MiG-29 Fulcrum A kit is the Italeri, and the best MiG-29 Fulcrum C kit is the new mould ICM kit (the earlier released kit in the all white box is an earlier Condor mould with raised panel lines, and it isn't as detailed).
