Exhausted
Well it's my first group build and I'm a little behind the curve, but let's see it anyway. I started this last week but have lazily procrastinated posting on my progress. This is Arii's 1/48 P-51D. I bought it this year on Ebay. It will be painted according this this decal sheet: I did the cockpit hastily because I plan on hanging her up. This is 3 days of work. It's moving swiftly. Also, I had to modify the kit's main gear doors as they were the incorrect size for fitting flush and closed. The tail wheel door is scratch built and scribed. Thanks for looking! Exhausted
Just wanted to delivery a fast update. I'm thinking either doing the blue tailed or the green striped bird. Not sure yet, but I'm leaning on blue. I have since wet sanded down to emory cloth and my bird is looking good, to me at least. I had to fill the antennae hole in the center, polish, and scratch build two antennae that I know aren't %100 faithful, or even identical, but more work will be done so I can finally prime her. Exhausted
Quick question: Should I preshade before a silver coat?
rightwinger26
Are you using Alclad? If you put down a overall under coat of gloss black then preshading won't even matter. Just highlight whatever panel lines with wash when your done. I like to use a white wash on silver unless I'm making a heavily weathered bird. Bill
Exhausted
Primed up. I used Tamiya Medium Grey because I don't know any better anyways. I am going to work on the bases of the antennae and rescribe the landing gear doors. After that I will be attaching the pilot, canopy, and propeller. I will be painting with Aluminum Talon acrylic paint. The demonstration video of the website shows them not even using a primer and just shooting on plastic. What should I do? Exhausted
Not too much has moved on the 'Stang. It's been sanded for a smoother surface for the NMF. It's about to be painted gloss white and be allowed to dry for a week. There is also a bottom antennae that I have yet to attach. I don't want it broken in handling so I am saving it for later. I'm not putting anymore into this pit. It's going to be hanging anyways. Masked off. Interior green applied.
Exhausted
I put a gloss white undercoat for the priming. I sprayed with MM Buffing Aluminium Plate. In this picture you can see that and the future applied.
bdt13
I sprayed with MM Buffing Aluminium Plate. What happened to the plan for the Talon acrylic? Curious, because I'm using that medium on my current Mustang build.
Exhausted
Talon acrylic was considered but my Aztek has some spray issues. I just picked up a new Badger 150 for $10, but before I did I sprayed from a rattle can. I may use the talon on some details though.
Exhausted
UPDATE: I just laid on a few details in the form of another metal shade. I mixed Tamiya's Flat Aluminium with a bit of White and Khaki. The shade may not be faithful, but it is fine for my purposes. One thing I haven't explained is that this is my first serious NMF. I've just been back into modeling for a year since I quit when I was 13, 11 years ago. Hardly relevant but still worth noting. This is what paint scheme I chose. This isn't painted yet, just some quick work in Gimp to see what it'll look like. Edited July 31, 2012 by Exhausted
Exhausted
Here's how it turned out. I airbrushed some weathering because I'm ready to get this thing on my ceiling. Edited July 31, 2012 by Exhausted
Exhausted
Just coated with Future for the third time. Decals either tonight or tomorrow.
Exhausted
OK decals are on. I destroyed the "Bollwevil" decal on accident, so it's missing from the left side. If anyone has one then PLEASE get in touch with me ASAP. That's all that will keep this model from being completed. The solution still isn't dry and the Micro-sol is visible. Thanks for looking. Maybe by the weekend she'll be coated again and hung up! Edited August 1, 2012 by Exhausted
HOLMES
EXHAUSTED. I think it looks quite impressive. The silver finish is very GOOD!
AX 365
Nice work so far. I like the subtle weathering. Do you plan to give another dusting of muzzle blast residue over the decals on the wings?
Exhausted
ADAPT AND OVERCOME Those are the words of this build. To answer your questions AX 365, yes I will go back over the residue on the guns and also the exhaust. I no longer need a replacement decal because I worked with my remaining sheet and a low res available on the web to make my first decal. The Boll Weevil is marked! Also, I scratch built a propeller disc that I think will be more appropriate for the ceiling. Edited August 4, 2012 by Exhausted
HOLMES
Exhausted, That scratch built propellor is most IMPRESSIVE.
Exhausted
UPDATE: I did some work on the prop, did some coats of future, and redid some weathering. I would call it about 95% done. I'm debating a wash or not. I still need touch ups, bottom antennae, pitot tube, and exhaust stacks. Edited August 6, 2012 by Exhausted
RKic
Hey, that is pretty nice. I'm not sure about the beigy looking panels, but that's just me. Overall it is a great finish. Especially considering your long sojourn from the hobby. Welcome back to the fold. PS. Do you know what the lines on the leading edges of the wings are for?
Exhausted
Thanks a lot. The lines are for gun alignment and sighting.
Exhausted
I just completely repainted the prop disc. I hope it turned out better then what it was. I've also applied fresh OD for a flat finish on the anti-glare panel. 97% done.
dmthamade
The blurred prop looks great!! A how to article would be great. Really like the colorful Mustangs. Hmmm B-36 hanging from the ceiling with six blurred props would look real nice
Exhausted
99% done. Missing a small touch up on the underwing decal and pitot tube. Tomorrow I'll post finished pictures of it in the sun. Anyways, I lost the antennae I was going to use on the bottom in the carpet so I made it out of a little flag tooth pick. I've done some touch ups and made a spot to hang it after it's finished. Here's what I have as of now:
-Neu-
I don't know why, but blue P-51s are my favorite scheme... and yours looks pretty awesome. Nice Job.
RKic
very nice all inverted like that. Good display.
