1/48 CF-100 Avro Canuck

Thanks Barney. Very kind words from a man who has "been there and done that!" If it wasn't for the air traffic controllers and the GCA's, a lot of guys never would have made it back safely. Well done, sir.

Well, she's finished. Here are a bunch of photos. Thanks to all who took the time to visit and leave feedback. It's appreciated.

That looks really great!

You asked for feedback so if you don't mind a couple of minor nit-picks

- It could be just the lighting, but the blue on the roundel seems a bit light? It's especially noticeable on the kitchen table shot.

- The Canadian Shield on your Red Ensign (shown in the up close tail shot) is facing the wrong way. Regardless of what side of the aircraft it's on, the 'harp' on the shield should always face the union jack (and the three leaves face away from it). If it's a ready made decal then you couldn't do much about it. I know a couple of decal makers have made that mistake. If you're looking for sheets of just Red Ensigns, Arrow Graphics and Aviaeology Decals get them right.

Beyond those minor quibbles, I think it looks great. Makes me want to pull one of mine out of the stash. All mine are MK5's though. I'll have to backdate one to a 4.

thanks

David,

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. The red ensigns and wong roundels are both Leading Edge decals. I used what I had available. The LE decals were better than the off register kit supplied roundels and red ensigns and there were no roundels supplied with the Arrow Graphics decals I used. There were red ensigns supplied on the Arrow Graphics sheet but they were three piece decals; red one on first, followed by the blue cross of the Jack and then the yellow bit. With these decals being similar to ALPS printed and needing to be cut closely to the ink, I would have had much difficulty with the three layers on the red sngin let alone having to deal with the minute yellow part of the decal. While the decals may not be completely accurate, it's what I had to work with. In the end, it's a pretty good representation of a 440 Sqn CF-100 Mk4B.

Yep I agree. Looks great. My observations are minor quibbles at best. I spend a lot of time knee deep in markings now so it's strange what I tend to notice now tht I never would have a few years ago.

Great looking build!

Seeing as the Royal Malaysian Air Force started off as a beneficiary of some fine Canadian-built aircraft (Tutor & Caribou) I've often pondered the possibility of a RMAF Canuck (and still do) as a What-if project.

Thanks for the inspiration!

No worries, David. I appreciate you sharing that info. I never noticed that little detail you brought forward through your post. It's great to know. Perhaps decal makers might pick up on that little tidbit of information. Thanks again.

That would be a great What If project. I did something like that years ago when building a Phantom. I was putzing along and halfway through the build I decided to finish it off as an RCAF bird, even though we never had them in our Air Force. I used a set of Belcher Bit Voodoo decals laid down on top of the model painted in Voodoo grey. It think it was pretty neat. You should build a RMAF Clunk. Good luck if you do.

Sorry mustanger but I have no idea what you're referring to other than what I just found as a result of a go ogle search. I don't think we get that show north of the 49th parallel. A friend of mine uses that expression all the time.

Sorry for the obscure reference. There's a character on an adventure/spy TV series south of our mutual border who uses "easy peasy" several times an episode. Pretty good show, actually.

We occasionally get Canadian series down here (Red Green, Da Vinci, Flashpoint, the reality cop show filmed in Vancouver), so I thought American series probably were seen up north as well.

By the way, you did a brilliant job on the CF-100

Mustanger,

We get all kinds of American tv shows and series up here. I've just never seen the one you referred to. Flashpoint is filmed in The Centre of the Universe...er, I mean, Toronto. Not a bad show but being a police officer myself, I take all police dramas with a very large grain of salt. Thanks very much for your comments. I appreciate them.

CM,

Thanks buddy. I like the way it turned out. Not 100% accurate but close enough for jazz.

Your quite welcome.

I've got Season One of Flashpoint on DVD, but I know what you mean about "grain of salt".

BTW, Burn Notice is on Netflix, if you happen to subscribe
