ckribs
I am fairly new to the model building world. I am enjoying builds.with my son. I am now wanting to build one for me. I am kind of leaning towards a tomcat or a super hornet.. But am completely open towards any suggestions you have.
warthoglvr
As far as ease-of-fit goes, the Tamiya F-16s, or their P-51 Mustangs are really nice. If you are fairly new to modeling, I would not recommend you cut your teeth on the Hasegawa Tomcat. It's a fairly complicated kit with some issues to sort out to get a good build. AFV CLub F-5s are also very nice fitting kits.

john53
An easy build and interesting for me was the Fujimi 1/72 F7U-3 Cutlass. I had very few fit problems and for a quick NMF I just used a can of Testors silver spray paint. I also liked the option of dropping the flaps, was a nice touch.---John
FAR148
Revell's F-15E kit is nice too. Steven L Edited August 24, 2012 by FAR148
ChippyWho
The Tomcat and Hornet/Super Hornet airframes are quite complex compared to older designs; the way most kits are engineered means that you get quite a fight with construction! Arguably, it could be good to go 'in at the deep end', though: you learn best by doing. However, if other Navy jets appeal, I'd recommend the iconic F-4 (Hasegawa) -there are some spectacular markings available and it may be a much better place to start. Joe Hegedus
Monogram Hawker Typhoon. One of the nicest-fitting kits I've ever built.
Shawn C.
It sounds like you are looking for a jet and, as posted above, it is hard to beat the Revell F-15E. It is also a great value and comes with a useable decal sheet too. A one color paint job may appeal to you as well. If you are looking for a prop, most of the Tamiya kits are real winners, too! ckribs
Ok the F15 mudhen sounds like a fun build..i am sure you can find lots of weapons for a cool OIF CAS loadout...looking at some paint jobs it looks like 2 shades of grey.. ..thanks for all the imput also
spejic
The Hasegawa 1/48 Skyhawks are easy to build, have very few faults, and look great out of the box. The Revell 1/48 F-15E is great because it is cheap and well designed, but there have been recent reports of warpage and other problems because it seems the molds have been overused. You can get the Revell 1/48 F/A-18E in the same places you get the F-15E, and it's a nice kit too.
gb_madcat_sl
Most definitely Tamiya's F-16. Mark
Viper88
Tamiya F-16 and Revell F-15E. For first jet kit I would take the F-16 over the F-15E as the F-16 comes with okay decals, and very nice weapons, the F-15E kit you would have to gather weapons from some other kit or source. Also, the F-16 air intake can be tricky for painting for first jet but you could always scatch build a intake cover or get a Steel Beach one, they are really nice and pretty cheap. Sukhoi Su-27
As others mentioned, Tamiya F-16 is awesome. I would also recommend Academy Su-27. For me at least it was really fun build with only a couple of problems.

CanadaMoe
+1 with Joe above!!! Monogram Hawker Typhoon. What a great fitting kit and quite an easy build. Moe
Neo
Hasegawa F-18A/C was the one i preferred to build
Eri
Tamiya 1/72 A-4 skyhawk. No fit issues and very little parts. Finish in a day.
Fly-n-hi
If you're new to modeling I'd avoid Hasegawa Hornets and Tomcats. They are nice kits for sure but not for beginners.
mike_espo
Probably the Tamiya 1/48 F-84G Thunderjet. Kit went together like a dream! Great detail OOB and easy to build. Built this one in '98 Although, the 1/48 Revell F-86D is very, very close to it! Edited August 25, 2012 by mike_espo
Collin
I just finished the Tamiya 1/48 A-1H Skyraider OOB. I have built the Tamiya P-51D & P-51B, which were great. I can say the A-1H Skyraider was as trouble free a build as I have ever had with great detail right out of the box. Cheers Collin Edited August 25, 2012 by Collin
Zero Enna
I'd say Hasegawa's He-111 (1/72), better if you can find the Revell of Germany rebox (way cheaper). I don't build modern aircraft (I bought many, specially MiGs, but I haven't build any of them yet, one of them is in progress though) so I can't say about that, and 1/72 only for me :D Best regards. José.

stalal
Every Tamiya kit I have built has been a fun to build and very satisfying. I cant say that for Hasegawa though. They are good kits but not as good as Tamiya.

mawz
As good as the Tamiya kits are, I'd also vote for the Revell (Monogram) Hawker Typhoon. The fit is almost in Tamiya territory, the detail is nice and it's a simple and easy build, unlike most of the kits being noted here. Great fit doesn't outweigh complex engineering and even the Tamiya P-51D is somewhat oversupplied with fiddly bits. Oh, and you can get the Typhoon for $20 or less.
