dmthamade
Inspired by Exhausteds Mustang build, i dusted this one off thats been sitting in the stash for a while. Decals are from Hussar Productions, i have to confess i've never heard of them but they are printed by Cartograph so they should be good. Basic build will be OOB, i may add some big P-38/P-47 drop tanks for the VLR escort version. There are belts included in the kit in a PE fret that also has some grillwork etc included. Still not sure which option i will do though i am drawn to "Little Que" with the blue striping covering the tail. Obligatory box picture. Decal sheet and instruction sheet I have build a Trumpeter Mustang before, but a B version. The build was relativley trouble free, exhausts were kinda off looking. Kit does have shape issues that are well documented but i won't worry about them. I will fill the wings on this one and paint it NMF. Found NMF easy after the experience gained with my P-47 build. Neo
nice this shall be good !! little Que is nice but that tail stripring might be a PITA
Exhausted
I'm excited to see this built in 1/32. I like to build in 1/48 because of higher scale versions dominating the market right now. I would love to see the detail of a static, gear down airplane. I have 1 or 2 of those options on my decal sheet. I would love to see the striped version because it will be more spectacular in the end. Also, being a builder who could pull that off would definitely show off some skill ;)
dmthamade
Darn!! I might regret saying i like the blue striped version. You guys are right, they look really challenging to do but so unique looking. I better stock up on the Tamiya tape. I'm filling the rivets on the wings now. I should have taken a fail on accuracy here and left them alone. Going off on a Rhetorical Rhant here, what the heck is WRONG with the people at Trumpeter!! I mean CRIPES!! The wings are well documented as being filled!! They proceed to put enough pockmarks in the wings to rival a school full of greasy food eating teenagers!! Geez!! Thing is, it would be less expensive to make the moulds without the rivets, but NO!! I'm using Mr Surfacer to fill the rivets, trowelling it on then i'll wet sand it off. Going to be doing this for a while, i'll post pics soon if i haven't turned this thing ito a Navy Mustang and "fold" the wings. Don
Neo
LOL even the tamiya kit has rivets on its wing !!
dmthamade
Yup, i've seen the Tamiya wings and there are rivets, just not the comparative divots the trumpeter wing has. I have filled, sanded and sprayed a primer coat on the lower wing. i can see a few areas that will need work, but otherwise it looks OK. Couple of pics. Don Pic looks a little washed out, i'll try a retake tomorrow. Edited August 31, 2012 by dmthamade
Exhausted
Nice progress. I made a hasty how to article on my blurred props which you asked about last month. http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=254406&st=0&gopid=2413912entry2413912

Future plans are to build the Airfix 1/24 Mosquito, but because of its size i would have to hang it from the ceiling, gear up and probably with blurred props.. Got the scan for the decal sheet, the stripe parts will help with the tape placement. Thanks again!! Don
dmthamade
OK, had a bit of time today and sanded down on wing top i had previously filled. I used Mr. Surfacer fo fill the rivets and lines, following the guide Jennings posted on the pinned Mustang post in the props section. The lines around the gun and ammo bays i taped over to prevent them from filling with the fill. Mr. Surfacer is easy to scribe out of the lines, so it wouldn't be too bad if they had some stray fill. I sprayed the wing after sanding with primer to help show flaws, i will have to go over at a few spots. A few pics. Upper half is the almost finished half, bottom half shows the Mr. Surfacer and tape applied. Pic shows the bottom wing a little clearer than previous pic. Don
dmthamade
OK, started in on the pit. I have the base coats down on most parts, then will start with weathering. Something i'm using for the first time are Nano Aviation belts from FineMolds. I have to say, these things are GREAT!! Made of styrene, very flexible so they can be posed in any position. They can be glued with any styrene glue, and detail looks great. Wish they would expand on these to include modern jets. Anyhow, two pics for the night. Don
Bigasshammm
Love your 32nd builds. This will be another treat.

dmthamade
Ok - where do I get those belts?!?!?! I got this set from Sprue Bros. http://store.spruebrothers.com/category_s/2115.htm Scroll down about 2/3 down. Have painted the seat assembly and will detail paint/weather the cockpit this weekend. dmthamade
Been a while since an update. Fighting a bad cold right now, don't know where the stuff i've been coughing up came from. It is a good match for faded Olive Drab though. Anyway, i did manage to finish the pit. Never been that good at doing pits, this one got basic paint/wash/drybrush. The belts i think turned out OK, good enough for the shelf sitters i do. The wing had some of the filled panel lines and rivets still showing, instead of filling them i LIGHTLY rescribed the panel lines and left the rivets alone. I did find a thread on another site debating how smooth and filled the lines/rivets were, i like the used look that the slightly exposed panel lines/rivets give. Some pics then i'll go cough up a lung. Don
dmthamade
Infected sinuses are whats been kicking my butt for the last week so i haven't been able to get anywhere with the build. Starting to improve so i might try sitting down at the bench to see what i can do. Don

Starting to improve so i might try sitting down at the bench to see what i can do. Don I hear ya. I got a bad cold for about a week or more righ before my wife n I went to cedar point for the weekend. Try having stuffed sinuses and then being whipped around by roller coasters. Instant motion sickness. I blame the kids starting school back.
dmthamade
Kids... I remember when my nephew first went to school. Him and all three of us adults were sick from October to May. Fun times!! God bless the little germ spreaders!! Man, the results of motion sickness and sinuses draining at the same time on a roller coaster... god help the people around you. Started attaching the wing, fit is OK but needs three passes to glue/clamp/set X3.Starting to think i should have started with the Tamiya kit and its documented great fit. The Trumpeter kit is OK, but the engineering and finish, mold quality are weak. Then again, it was half the price. Age old story, you get what you pay for. Don
Bigasshammm
Factor in the daylong drinking the day before and it was an adventure at best. I handled it significantly better than swmbo. I only had one iffy moment while being tossed around on the raptor. Otherwise I was a champ. The new ZM kit fits rather good. There's some oddities about its design though and parts do need cleaned up but otherwise for the number of parts I'm impressed with the fit.

There's some oddities about its design though and parts do need cleaned up but otherwise for the number of parts I'm impressed with the fit. Those ZM kits are insane!! I've never seen a kit where you add skin sections over the complete airframe, just small doors or cowls. Felt well enough to put a coat of primer over the airframe, control surfaces and gear doors. I left the stabilizers off to make masking and painting the blue stripes easier. I have a plan for these, hopefully it all works out( Geez, why did i pick the blue stripes, could have done the green of yellow tail ). Something i've read about Hussar Decals is the Stars and Bars are wrong, proportions are off or something. Havent taken a close look at them yet, casual glance they look OK. Still have to start assembling the landing gear, fuel tanks, etc. I was going to do this configured for the VLR missions but i need 110 gal. drop tanks for that. No one does these in 1/32 so i will either do the smaller tanks or 500lb. bombs. They did use the big 138(?) gal P-38 Lightning tanks on missions with ground attack rockets, usually not on the VLR missions. One pic for the nite. Don
dmthamade
Ok, managed to get the base color down on the build. I'm using Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver. This is a spray bomb that i've used before on my P-47 build. I'll use other metallic shades from Tamiya and Model Master for different shaded panels. Some pics, first is oveall pic. This pic shows the filled rivet and panel line detail. I didn't completly fill the rivets, some show very slightly to show some wear and tear. Panel lines were filled but i went over them very lightly, once again to show some wear and tear. Rivet detail on fuselage is a little heavy, but should look good with a wash. dmthamade
Update time!! Did more paintwork, painting the wings a different shade of silver than the fuselage. I also picked out some panels with different shades of silver. I didn't do a big variation as most pics i've seen show a slight difference between panels. Today i tackled the tail stripes. Exhausted sent me a pic of a 1/48 decal sheet that had this P-51 including the tail stripes. I made a copy that was blown up to 1/32 and used this as a reference to lay down the tape. Thank you very much, Exhausted!! I used Jammydog tape, 3mm wide to lay down the stripes, spacing was achieved using a strip of the same tape. There are some areas where there is a slight variation, to get stuff to line up. These happened where the fuselage stripes joined the horizontal tail surfaces. I used Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue which is very dark, close to black. I think i should have used a lighter blue, but it's too late now, not going to redo this beasty. Some pics. Two hours of masking. Paint applied, masks removed. Still have to mask and paint the fuselage where there should be a blue line running vertically to border the stripes. Will also have to mask and paint silver areas on both sides of the vertical fin and rudder where the serial number is. Still have to paint prop, mask and paint canopy and anti glare panel. Should have that done tonight, then clear coat and hopefully will do the stickers tomorrow. Don
CorsairMan
Wow! Perfect stripes! Is there a trick to keeping them in line?
