Revell 1/144 747-8I - wow!!

Recommended Posts

Home for lunch for a few minutes, and just tore open the parcel containing the 747-8I test shot from Revell that had just arrived. I can't post any photos just yet, but suffice it to say, this kit blows the Zvezda kit out of the water by miles and miles and miles! You're all going to be *very* impressed with it!

Here's a preview, more as soon as I'm back home as I'm on my phone.

Waow, THANK YOU FlyingDutchman !!!

Looks interesting, these rascals "copied" the Zvezda 1:144 "trademark" of hollowed out intake fan, wise decision :worship: given the size and spacing of these large fan blades. I am impatient to see more of that beauty, especially the nose section (beautiful on the Russian kit) and the landing gears.

Ok :santa:, don't you dare lay one single toe in my house without 2 or 3 of these beauties in your hood. Still 58 days left, you have been warned :cop: !

Cheers, Steven

Exactly what a colleague (master modeller, builder of military stuff only) used to say, basically glue the 5 parts together and dip the thing in white paint et voilà.

He is now quite impressed with the detail level reached by airliner kits in the past 5-10 years.

Someone wrote that the Revell kit was much better than the Zvezda kit.

For a start, on the Russian kit the wing underside is designed in 1 part, integral with a section of the belly, which makes for a strong joint and good dihedral control while on the German kit the wing underside is in 2 parts with an insert for the belly.

The rest looks quite similar in design, down to the engine design which looks very Zvezda-esque.

Oh yes, the Revell kit provides you with a flight deck and the ldg bays look more detailed.

That and it looks like there are not enough fanblades on the disc. Or is it two part?

It looks like it is a two part piece. The lower ones as the spinner and the upper ones have the mounting hole. as for the angle..I think once they are mounted together it will be hardly noticable. I can't wait to see a completed build up. I may have to snag one of these at some point.

Hello all,

Thanks to IPMS Deutschland, new detailed pics are now visible here. It sure looks like a very nice kit now please RoG bring it on BEFORE :explode: Xmas  !

At 1st sight, I was shocked by the absence of yellow portions on the decal sheet, I thought they expected us to do some masking, but it appears the scanning is responsible for that.

Cheers, Steven

hm...remains disappointing. allthough its only a testshot, the windows really look horrible...

Only interesting thing is the fact they mentioned the F version...

Decals are also disappointing, instead of white leading edge panels, there could have been the windowframes.

The tail is going to be blue, so the white panels shouldnt be a problem. would be nice to know if there's really no yellow logo...if this is the case i got to laugh :-)

the reviewer also is stunned by the missing frames... but wrote that its only a printout of what is planned...

Yes, the pax windows really look big and I think clear window/metal frame decals would be a waste on this very kit... unless they provided it as some sort of white decal strip with clear windows printed in, the white portion would then hide the size difference between the (correct size) clear window decal and the (too big) window opening. But then you will have to deal with matching your white paint to the white decal strip.

Regarding the yellow portion, it looks like it is a black & white scan of the decal sheet, the yellow is not showing clearly but you can notice there is something on the German flag, there is a hint of "something else".

The gears look nicely detailed but... why the smaller nose wheel ? They should be the same diameter as the main ones. Bah, detail...

Here are my thoughts on the test shots and decals.

First, the Lufthansa logo is in yellow. One can see a slight discoloration outside of the blue circle suggesting the presence of the yellow. As mentioned before, it is a b&w scan of the decals, which would make the yellow nearly invisible.

Regarding the windows, I pulled out several pictures from airliners.net and tried to measure them against other discernible features. It seems that the long panel around the windows is about 2.4-2.6 times wider than windows on the real aircraft, and that the width of the doors is about 2.5x the height of the windows. I did several similar measurements based on the pictures of the test shots and they came up around 2.5-2.7. This would suggest, given some margin of error in all the measurements, that the windows are about correct in their size, maybe on the slightly bigger side.

I have to admit that I am rather confused by the decal sheet as well. In their releases of baby airbuses, revell has always included clear windows with borders sometimes accompanied by blanks. It would be rather odd that they would provide only blank windows without a clear decal with frames, and same goes for the door windows.

I have to correct my own post here, wrong info sorry : 747-8 I and F main tires are 52in (132.1cm) in diameter while nose tires are 50in (127cm). There is a slight difference in diameter which would equates to 0.35mm in 1:144... no big deal, I will just steal Zvezda's nose tire instead, as I have got a few extra.
