Flyer77
Hi All, I'm keen to start off the old revell 1/144 B747 SAC kit... However, revell has the new 747-400 that has recess lines instead. 1. Would it be possible to use the -400 fuselage instead? (On condition that the UPPER DECK is changed to a shorter version -100 and omit the WINGLET) 2. May I ask if there's anything I should look into for the conversion? Many Thanks,
Trojan Thunder
While you could modify the upper deck hump and remove the winglets the -400 and -100/-200 do not share the same wing root. The -400 had a more aerodynamic fairing around the root leading edge. Compare these to shots to see what I mean 747-200 747-400F
umtutsut
If you can wait for awhile, Dragon/DML is supposed to have their own, presumably new-tool, 1/144 version. Not sure I've heard a release date. Les (The Voice of Authority -- www.voiceofauthority.net)

Unless you aren't speaking of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The 2 birds are dash 100 and dash 100SRs. I imagine using a dash 400 would involved a bit of work, however if you promise to photo document and share with the forum, it should turn out great! :^) This would be a good point to ask a question of the group. While I was living in Japan in the mid-'70's I had a very large scale 747 kit. I've been told by someone that is an uber airliner freakazoid that there has never been a kit of the 747 larger than 1/100th scale. MIne was, to my memory of it, a Hasegawa kit and never exported to the states, and larger than 1/100th. What say you out there? Does anyone have knowledge of a larger kit? Thanks. Flyer77
Hi Folks, Thanks for the various input... I'll take note of the wing root fairing and as for the Dragon's release... I'm not sure if the wing root details is right cos I've the initial 747 release. The bigger scale I knew of is from AIM... 72nd B747-100/200 and 400. Cheers
Vince Hoffmann
I did an internet search just out of curiosity and found a 1:72 747 VC-25 available from Anagrand: http://www.gdkits.com/172-boeing-747-vc25-air-force-one-p-25920.html?language=en And if you want to pay for the shipping, Hannants in UK has the AIM 747 100-200 for sale: http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/TW7212001 Edited October 14, 2012 by Vince Hoffmann

habu2
If you can wait for awhile, Dragon/DML is supposed to have their own, presumably new-tool, 1/144 version. Not sure I've heard a release date. Revell Germany is set to re-release their 1/144 SCA kit in the near future, supposedly before the end of the year. Kit # is 04863, several places are offering it for pre-order now.
Flyer77
As of current... I'm looking forward to both Dragon's (new issue) and Revell's reissue... Guessed I'll stay put... Perhaps should consider rescribing instead. Thanks Gentlemen,
Jennings
A bit late to the party here. First off STAY FAR AWAY from the Revell 747-400 kit. The Revell (USA) 1/144 747-100 kit is FAR superior to it in every way, with the possible exception of having raised panel lines. The Revell Germany -400 kit is so horrible that it can barely be described as a 747 at all. The circa 1971 747-100 kit is a much more accurate replica. All that said, if you must have a 747 with engraved detail, and you're up for a fairly major conversion, the forthcoming Revell Germany 747-8I is a gem of a kit compared to both of the previous ones. I have a first test shot on my desk (I'm doing the decals for Revell). It is the first 747 kit in any scale to accurately capture many details of the airplane, especially the wing/body fairing. While you *could* convert it back to a 747-100 or a 747SR (externally almost identical) to do your SCA, it would take a lot more work than simply using the old 747-100 kit and bringing it up to scratch. Not sure I've heard a release date. Searching for info on this kit, I found this image. This looks to be a pre-painted cutaway model, much like the FameMaster 1/72 shuttle and 1/100 Apollo Saturn V. Jennings
The already released Dragon 747s have been pretty well panned as crude and toy-like. Revell is still (41 years later) the best way to go.
