rightwinger26
So my wife bought this for me from the Squadron mystery deal a few weeks back, and when it showed up in the mail, I knew it was going straight to the bench. I love building ships, but I consider myself a novice at best at it. I have been building 700th in the past due to space and they are cheaper, so better for practice. Apparently the practice is paying off because I couldn't be more thrilled with the results so far, pretty good it think. I didn't plan on doing a WIP for this, but I decided to share to get some critiques and tips for things I may be doing wrong. I boned up the boot line a little towards the bow, but over all fairly happy with the results. I need to paint the deck, then I can add the various deck hardware and props, give it a gloss coat and wash. The superstructure parts are for the most part built, except for small pieces, they are just dry fitted in place for the photo. This has also been a good learning experience. I never really knew much about smaller German ships, but this is a Type 1936A, the last one before the dual forward gun was placed in the forward mount for the rest of the class. This particular ship was built in Bremen (they all were), and survived the war and given to the British. The British used her for target practice and eventually scrapped her in 1949 if I remember what I read. Let me know what you guys think of her and thanks for looking! rightwinger26
So I got all of the photo etch for the deck equipment. I need to cut 8 pieces of round styrene stock to put in the center of the hose reels, CA the cranes on to the plastic piece, but that will get done later. The mines are painted, I just need to glue them in place. Hopefully tomorrow ill be starting the forward superstructure. Tanks for looking Bill
rightwinger26
Just a quick update before I go to work, sorry about the poor quality pictures, I'm in a little bit of a hurry. The aft deck house is painted, but before its cemented in place, I need to weather and dull coat it, and the hull, so it's just dry fit in place. Thanks for looking! IrishGreek
She's looking pretty sweet! Nice job. Looking forward to seeing her finished. John
rightwinger26
Sorry, it's been about a month, but I have been working on her slowly the whole time, just trying to make sure I get stuff right. The hull is painted and washed, and dull coated, I just need to add some rust. The after deck house is the same. I still need to high light some points with a silver pencil. Next up will be adding the PE ladders, and railings on the aft part of the ship, then building up the aft superstructure minus guns, then it will be time to work on the forward lower superstructure. Thanks for looking, Bill
rightwinger26
It's been a while since I've updated this, but I have been occupied with other things. I finally got most of the railings attached, and some painted, tomorrow ill be doing the railing for the starboard side of the aft deckhouse, then painting all of them. Once that is done I can pretty much finish the aft part of the ship. Thanks for looking! Bill
rightwinger26
Just a quick update, all the railings are installed on the aft end of the boat, I just need to paint them, then finish pointing and add washes to the various bits like the torpedo batteries, tubs and such. The last things I will be doing will be the funnel cage and add the aft mast, then it is on to the forward superstructure. Thanks for looking! Bill
HOLMES
Bill, That is quite an impressive build. The detailing is excellent. She looks the. BIZ!!! Are you going to put her up on a wooden base display or put her in water diorama.
rightwinger26
Thanks for the nice words Holmes. I'm pretty happy with her the way she is turning out, especially since this is my first serious attempt at a ship, and I have to say, I'm hooked!!! I'm not going to do a diorama, granted, I love the way most of them look over on modelwarships.com, but I like them to be full hull and look somewhat weathered, but still with a little museum flair. Once the cold weather breaks and it's not freezing in the garage, I'm going to make an oak base for her and have her sitting on blocks. I've gotten a little work done this weekend, I have painted the decks for the rest of the back of the boat, so this week I will be giving the remaining bits for the midships and the stern a wash, and installing them. The aft funnel is done, just needs a wash, as do the torpedo batteries. The PE for the top of the funnel was a bit fiddly, but I made it work. I forgot to paint the inside of the stack, but that is an easy fix. I have an Acadamy Graf Spee in the stash, that will be getting started when this one is done. And I ordered the 1/350th HMS Warspite from squadrons mystery deal :D Thanks for looking! Bill
rightwinger26
Ok, so the railings are all painted aft, I got the rest of the aft deckhouse installed, the aft stack, both torpedo batteries, and a couple tubs. All that is left aft for now is the life rafts that go on the torpedo tubes, the railings on that catwalk, aft deck house, and the searchlight platform. I'll be installing all the ships guns last, and the aft mast won't go on now for fear of breaking it. Hope you guys like the pictures. The next project is the forward stack and the housing that goes around it. Thanks for looking!!! Bill
rightwinger26
So the forward funnel is done, just need to add the railings. The first portion of the forward superstructure is done, I need to paint the wood decks of the next two levels to finish it off. Obviously the railings need to be done also. Thanks for looking! rightwinger26
To start with, my little helper that does nothing but watch...... And now for the ship, I got the rest of the forward superstructure weathered and flat coated. For the wood deck on the bridge level, I painted it haze grey, then lightly brushed it with testers MM wood to give it a weathered old wood look, followed with a wash of German grey to give the planks depth.....I think it works but I'm no shipbuilding expert. Next up is to finish the railings on the bow, forward superstructure, and the catwalks. After that is small potatoes like the guns, boats, masts and rigging. Thanks for looking!! Bill PS....sorry, I didn't realize some of those pictures were so grainy until I posted them, I'm not much of a photographer! Shawn M
looks nice!
rightwinger26
Thanks for looking Shawn. Just a quick update, I've gotten all the bits and pieces on the bridge level, and made the radar array out of three pieces of PE, you can see through it, just not from that angle, i know, it looks over painted but its not. Believe it not most of the major construction is done. All the life rafts are painted, I just need to apply a wash. The last time consuming task left is to paint and install the railings on the bow. The mast is just dry fit, that's why it is crooked. The weapons won't take very long, and I can't wait to work on the rigging. I'm already starting to study the instructions for my next ship, the Graf Spee. Thanks for looking! Bill Edited May 4, 2013 by rightwinger26
rightwinger26
So I've gotten the guns built and painted, they just need a wash, then attach the life rafts to the sides with the appropriate PE. She's very close to being done, in fact, the last time I'll be needing the air brush is for a final flat coat. I just have bits and pieces to glue on, and the rigging. Once I get an old washer and dryer out of the garage and can get to my tools, I'll be making a wood base. I'm already starting to study the instructions for my next ship, the Graf Spee. Thanks for looking! Bill
rightwinger26
So here she is, all that is left is to put the life boats on, and the rigging, but this is pretty much the ship. For my first SERIOaiS ships build, I'm very happy. My wood shop is clean, so I'm going to build a birch base for her, I'll post more pictures in the finished folder when that happens. Thanks for looking!!! Bill
