I have a phantom I could build.

Mike

I wish I could too, but as a Special ops build, normal squadrons would not really be applicable I think. Mind you if the guys who wish to run this GB give more details and examples it just might.

**** Its NOT my GB but****** Would a IDF F-4 with the special heavy camera be applicable?

Also it looks like we ****might*** have enough interest now.

So we're getting close folks. Lets keep spreading the word.

So not sure what kind of phantom you have in mind Mike. Like Phantom mentioned, maybe one of the special recon nosed IDF birds or one of the LORAN equipped F-4D's would fit in but I think a regular old iron hauler would be a tad outside of the realm of what we're going for.

Wh1skea, Your suggestion of a KG200 Flying Fort that was actually used for long range recon missions might fit into the idea of this build very nicely. One of the yellow bellied birds used to train fighter crews probably would be outside this GB. I like where you're going though. Do you have references of actual planes used for the long range recon?

Hopefully we can get on the calendar and see what comes of this.

Since I'm having trouble finding enough material for the B-17, I was wondering if a B-29 from the famous 509th Composite Group would qualify. That would be the group that dropped the atomic bombs.

Assume covert ops / spy stuff counts as well?

Air America, SOE aircraft used in WW2 to drop agents / supplies into occupied countries, CIA aircraft equipped with the Fulton "skyhook" suface to air recovery system used to pick up agents etc.

AaronW - Absolutely yes to all of your examples. Like I mentioned in my first post, this is for all countries, all eras, any time frame. From ballons to drones as far as I'm concerned. We're close to getting a yes from the GB Mods so we need to make sure we keep the interest up. Fingers crossed.

Would an aircraft from THIS episode of Dogfights be possible ( more directly the F6F Hellcat)

Without watching the entire 44 minute episode, and guessing you're refering to the night fighter version of the Hellcat, I'd say it doesn't really fit the theme of what we're looking for. BUT, this would fit right in with the Grumman Group Build they are advertising for on boards.

For those interested in fighters the 5318 Provisional Unit / 1st Air Commando Group should fit right in. It was an aviation unit put together to provide support to the British Chindits who operated behind Japanese lines in Burma. P-47s, P-51s and B-25s provided close air support, while C-47s, L-1s, L-5s, gliders and Sikorsky R-4 helicopters provided logistical support.

No photo of either aircraft. I can't locate the number of the first aircraft used. I expect that they might have been camouflaged but without tail codes.

More later, if I can find extra info.

Best wishes,

Grant

Hey Phantom,

What do we need to be 100%?

Come one come all for the Spec Ops Group Build. Fun time will be had by all. At least as much fun as you can generate by yourselves building your favorite special operator.

Matt, what context was this He-111 used? Any specific pix or documentation of it's use as a special operations bird?

don

It was - according to reports - designed to drop paratroopers/demolition teams behind enemy lines.
