Another one for 2012

Recommended Posts

Well the week before Christmas my wife was on vacation so that gave me a quasi-vacation from watching the kids all day and I was able to finish this up. I left a few of the little bits off as They aren't seen or I just didn't even notice. The instructions for this kit couldn't be more complex. Anyway for a somewhat quick build I'm happy with it. Once again it "looks" like a 17.

Couldn't take outdoor pictures as we were having a blizzard yesterday.

I don't have a camera so I have to use my phone for everything so the pics aren't great. Outside in sunlight is when I can get the most out of the phone camera. Sorry for bad pics.

And here she sits with the SB-17 I started at the same time as this build and a 483rd BG 15th AF B-17 I built last year or two years ago.

91st I believe. It's only like that because the original airframe took a flak hit right to the ball turret section which blew a huge hole in it. Instead of repairing it they just removed the entire tail section and replaced it with the tail section of a hangar queen. The hq was older and thus painted camo so that's what gave it its mottled look.

Looks great as usual Hamm!!! Is it they way I'm looking at it or is the nose shaped more like an F nose?

I might have used the wrong nose idk. The kit gives u three but all my pictures of her show no nose gun and I think the other two have holes for nose guns so I went with this one.

I've never built that kit, didn't know there were options. I thought the G models had a shorter nose and the F were more angled forward. I dont have any reference stuff near me right now, coud be wrong. Loks great none the less

It seems about right, maybe a little pointier than the real thing. I'm not technical enough to know all the variations in B-17s. I just know I like them!

Also I just realized I have no pitot tube on. Oh well.

I'm the same way honestly, that's just something I remember from the Flying Fortress GB. And now that I'm home and looking at books, the F's were pointier and G's sort of stubby, but like you said, oh well, it looks like a Fort ( and good one ), and only modellers would notice anyways. Look forward to seeing more.

I LOVE it Kris! The multiple colors and finishes really come together nicely- and your weathering is perfect. :thumbsup:/>

Gotta live The Detailer black wash. It really goes well oer alclad and helps make it look like metal.

Thanks high praise indeed!

Looking really good Kris. I love it when people build the older Revell/Monogram bombers and put some TLC into them.

This is actually the new tooled kit that came out last year or the year before. It's the best representation of a 17 in 72nd scale by far but there are still some nuances. For dollar value the Academy kits are probably the best but they have their nuances as well.

Sean it was painted with MM paints for all colors. Neutral grey, olive drab, and insignia red. The silver is Alclad white aluminum.

I did the exhaust streaking with Tamiya smoke. First time I tired that usually I just used thinned black.

The rudder and ailerons were painted with a Tamiya spray bomb Silver Leaf I think was the color. Can't remember off hand. Just to differentiate them since they were painted fabric.

Then the entire thing aside from the bottom of the wings was liberally covered in The Detailer black wash and wiped off with q-tips. I didn't bother with the undersides of the wings because it's not sitting on a mirror or anything so why waste it?
