gbuesche
Does anyone have any photos of the radar panel of an AJ, or know of a source (or if the Naval Fighters book has any)? I have a colleague whose dad was a B/N in them and is looking for some. Thanks!

Tailspin Turtle
If I remember correctly, there were two different bombardier stations, early and late. The early one was basically the same as in the P2V Neptune using the APS-31 search radar for navigation and the APA-5A radar bombsight for attack. The first 40 production AJ-1s were delivered in that configuration. See http://www.network54.com/Forum/149674/thread/1252257769/1252282138/AJ-1+Savage+cockpit+info+%28image+heavy%29. Those are basically the same illustration as in the Ginter book. The later bombardier station was an early version of the AN/ASB-1 (not to be confused with the much earlier ASB-1 utilizing the Yagi array antennas) that incorporated a periscope for visual aiming in addition to radar aiming. It was available for AJ-2 production. A later version of the AN/ASB-1 was used in the A3D-1/2. I've never seen a picture of the one in the AJ.
