History channel's Air Aces.

Recommended Posts

Oh, I see... History in the Making. Sounds to me like the guy who told you that started working at the History Channel after being fired for having bought "Voice of Fire" for the National Gallery in Ottawa! Or maybe it was his cousin...

ALF

I wonder ho wmany people will have to google "voice of Fire" to know what you are talking about. I am all for the arts, but the money spent on some of those pieces is true Insanity.

to go back on topic, I am a HUGE fan of Air Aces as well as the "War Stories" series that aired back in November for Remembrance day. Great CG, historical footage, current re-enactments along with intervies from people who actually knew the pilot...It is one of the best show sof its type I have seen. True history instead of the over hyped material that was on dogfights(tho I did liek that show at the time!!)

They almost fooled me into beleiving they were turning around, then I saw the new series coming this spring..Alien Mysteries. The sad thing is, other than a few drama series, there is only a few shows I watch on some of these channels. Ice Pilots and air aces on History, the first 48 on A&E, discovery really only has mythbusters and the odd episode of mayday...NG has a few good specials once in a while. If you added up all the tv I watch in a week, you could fit it all onto a single channel adn still have room for all the crapolla that they show.

That's got to be it - the ultra low production costs of these shows means that they are pure gravy for the History Channel. What would make them low budget is that they are all likely done with 0 union involvement and are all likely edited and cut by the same production company. Compared to the CGI, voice acting, interviews and complicated editing that a show like Air Aces would have... this is pennies on the dollar.

But the only way the History Channel will get the hint is if there is no one watching.

I'll admit I on occasion watch some of those shows, mostly because there's worse/nothing on the other channels. I miss the old days when we had shows like for king and country with Norm Christie, and acctual specials about historic events, timelines, turning points in history, etc.... Discovery is getting to be just as bad, they gotta come up with shows similar to compete with the crap history puts out, flying wild alaska, licence to drill, highway through hell, auction kings the list goes on and on. plus the fact that the same shows repeat 30times a day drives me crazy oh look daily planet is followed by daily planet jeez! being currently unemployed means I get a lot more tv time and I find myself not watching it for that very reason. Instead I go on the web and rant about it lol. The biggest problem I find though is a series like air aces, greatest tank battles, mayday, mighty planes/ships is they'll make a few episodes then just re-run them over and over, yeah the AN-124 is a big plane and carry's heavy loads but there's a lot of mighty planes out there, the 747, airbus' beluga, the C-17, A400M, hell any airliner bigger than a 737 could have a spot! air aces will run out of WWII pilots to discuss, they won't do any german aces because they were on the wrong side of the war same with japanese, and though they did an episode on Col. Olds we'll likely not see any other modern aces either. As for WWI well who knows maybe the red baron for obvious reasons(being the most famous) but that would bore the general public they want WWII europe aces because most forgot that there were multiple fronts and not one of them can name a pacific theatre ace or sqn. hell I think most have forgotten the flying tigers and black sheep....anyway rant over and fingers crossed we get some real programming soon from these failing stations because if not I'm getting rid of cable all together(that is now what the web is for anyway right?)

I've watched all the episodes so far and have enjoyed them; i think they're much better done than dogfights. one thing i noticed is that with the cockpit scenes with an actor, the glass looks so dirty i would wonder how could they ever see anything out there.

Yeah I agree. Discovery and History channel have been going down hill fast with all those "History in the making" reality tv shows. With CGI bringing the production cost down, you'd think they'd be more enthusiastic about making historical shows so that the history in History channel will finally mean what the channel is all about. Another one that has been going down hill too is The Learning Channel "TLC" which should now be called "The Dumb Channel" because everything you learned through your life will be lost by watching one of their current reality tv show.

Last nights was "Wing Walkers" haven't watched it yet....

It was another good and informative episode. Plus I really like those scenes of the Lancaster.

Air Aces is probably the best thing on TV at the moment but the company were originally contracted to do only six episodes which we should be close to now. I'm hoping that it proved popular enough for further shows to be done but at a million per episode it's a pricey show to do. One reason that it may seem to have a WWII/RAF/RCAF emphasis is that the Hamilton Museum have supplied a number of the a/c including of course the Lanc. Lets hope that more episodes will be done in the future but for the rest of this month expect only reruns of the first six shows.

I'm also a fan of Ice Pilots just for the piston pounders alone but must admit I found the tribute episode to Arnie very touching.

It'd be very disappointing if that's it for Air Aces. I'll need to drop the cable packing with History channel because there's no other reason for me to keep that channel. I watched sixth episode on Francis "Gabby" Gabreski. Nice CGI's of the P-47 "Jug" and Fw190's. Like the other ones, it was informative with small facts not found in other refrences. Speaking of which, I cracked open my 56th fighter group squadron book to glimpse thru it again.

I was very sadden when I watched that Ice Pilot episode :crying2: . Before that I was really happy to see the episode where he returned and was looking much better.

I really liked that History Channel miniseries on the Carrier Enterprise! Great mix of animation, footage, and interviews.

Enterprise 360, right? I like it too. Very much like Patton 360 but about the USS Enterprise CV-6's WW2 missions.

Too bad those types of programs aren't as economical as say Pawnstars. Hopefully the History channel will get it like a restaurant that serves bad food, people will stop coming.
