The volleyball scene was what enticed the chicks in to see it in the theatres. It worked! In the summer of '86, as a budding young fighter pilot, that movie was responsible for a LOT of my "fun" with girls who had been properly 'primed' by the volleyball scene.

While it may have been somewhat cheesy, I still believe Top Gun was one of the few movies that really gave one the feeling of air combat - something that most people cannot experience otherwise. Technically, there are many, many problems with the scenes in the movie (and I know nothing about carrier ops). Artistically, though, it was a feast for the eyes.

My vote for worst fighter aviation movie is a tie between Iron Eagle and Firefox.

TOP GUN

First, at this site with many aviation buffs and military types here we are probably too anal about the inaccuracies and creative licensing of the stuff in TOP GUN. But it was a fun movie, had great ariel filmed sequences, showed off cool aircraft and the perceived coolness of being a fighter pilot, cough err, Naval Aviator :D/>/> But it came at a time of interesting days in the world during the mid 80's. Cold War cooling off, the growing technology boom of the 80s including the burgeoning Home Theatre and Surround Sound. Many a consumer got caught up into this by TOP GUN demos at hi-fi stores.

I do not need 3D version as I personally hate 3D gimmicks in movies especially 2D to 3D conversions but so be it for others to see.

I have Top Gun on Blu Ray and oh maybe once per year or so I watch it, usually around the days of the Abbotsford Air show in August.

Even I got laid the night Top Gun came out. I was in training in Camp Borden and took my girlfriend to the show in Toronto.

I agree, I didn't think it was that bad, sure it wasn't perfect but I can think of a lot worse movies. Pearl Harbor was crap plus the ones you mention.

At least the jet in Firefox looks better than the new Iranian jet.

I took my 8- year old son to Top Gun today. We both enjoyed it, I am grateful for this thread as I am sure I would have missed it if not for the post. I knew it was coming out but didn't know it was already in the theatres and only for 6 days. It was fun to see again.

Just got back from a late night showing w/ my brother... Laughed alot at both the awesome corniness and awkward man-to-man one-liners, but mostly 'cause all we could think about were scenes from hot shots...also realized for the first time that the final dogfight probably wouldn't involve EVERY topgun student in the class, since afaik, they would return to different squadrons... Lol

Although the dogfight action scenes do look WAY cooler in imax & 3d. Loved top gun since i was a kid, and still do, warts and all.

You will note how people call the Navy Hero in the movie "colonel" (along with the spacious cockpits -- thats an A-6 Kolja!-- and everything else that is just so wrong)

The review:

Warning! Spoilers!

Mitchell climbs into a nearby F-15 with the aid of a large stepladder.

That just cracked me up

As bad as te technical errors are they are fun to watch the jets flying and for most people that saw the movie that is what they liked. I don't know how much better seeing it in Imax would be compared to when i saw it in Omaha on a huge Cinerama screen . It probably will look better but I'll have to wait and see.

Thanks TT. Another aviation B movie I gotta see. Tell me does Ice T rap in this movie! I hope there's a cameo of Flavor Flav! :rofl:/>

I believe the only movie he raps in is Breakin', and he was surprisingly bad. But the movie had some good dancing, lycra, and an uncredited appearance by the always awesome Jean-Claude Van Damme.
