crackerjazz
I'm really grateful to him for running such a site -- very useful info and pics :) Hey, John, thanks! Some progress on the electronics package for the steerable antenna: Camera wouldn't focus right....

crackerjazz
Hey, Manfred, Mike, thanks! Some progress on the electronics package... You wouldn't believe this but I wasn't too happy with the ribs on the motor casing so I pulled out all of the ones from the other side which I now regret. Some things should be left well enough alone. It will be connected at an angle. And actually it's the back of the box that will be showing in this direction.
crackerjazz
The never-ending story of the steerable antenna: At least I can work on the back of the box. Not a lot to do on this side of the box. Just a couple ribs and some detail on the mounting. For the motor casing there are vent holes on one side of the shell (haven't figured out how to depict those -- maybe I'll just paint the openings black. Thankfully the other side doesn't have any. I completely agree! I also like the little surprise. Looking at your images of a shaft being turned and wondered ... what's he workin' on now?? ... What a nice surprise to see the wonderful workmanship for the central horn of the dish ... man crackerjazz ... you ... are ... good! Pete
johnlove_mk_II
It's such a treat watching all these parts come into existence. Each one's literally a "model" in it's own right. Can't wait to see more.

ApolloMan
The level of detail on this, is just mind blowing. Im intrested in that technique you do with making points, I will have to try that out. I look forward to seeing this LM on all legs :thumbsup:/> Keep up the great work Edited August 15, 2015 by ApolloMan
K2Pete
I look forward to seeing this LM on all legs Oh geez ... don't put any extra pressure on crackerjazz ... he's only doing the Ascent Stage! And CJ, while all this detail is spek-frikkin-tak-yoo-lar ... if you're gonna be wrapping it in foils, it's not gonna be visible to us unwashed masses. Or ... are you NOT going to wrap it up? This is such an a-may-zinggg model! ... but isn't the attic getting a little warm up there? Pete
crackerjazz
Hi, John, thanks! Thanks, Mick! -- Oh, Pete's right -- I gave up the descent stage because of the 3-foot-wide landing gear span :( And Pete, sadly, your words ring true -- the S-Band antenna's truss details will all be hidden under foil. Part of me didn't want to build it but the devil on my shoulder kept telling me, in his Gollum-y voice, to build it. The Smeagol side of me had to fight equally hard not to build the docking drogue. crackerjazz
I've been experimenting with a variety of materials for the skin. At first I wanted to use acetate, and tried to wrinkle it and it turned out awful. It creased in spots where I didn't want it to. I found a bag of chips that suited my needs. I asked my LHS if Humbrol enamel would cling to it and I was told it should work so wish me luck. I used smoother spots where the wrinkling is not too pronounced and matches the photos as best I could. It meant eating more popcorn, though. I dropped by the hardware store and found some Scotch double-sided tape but it was a pain to peel off the backing strip. I found some El-cheapo double-sided tape which was a breeze to use. Where I needed the skin to curve inwards I had to open up the panel. My wife's remark was "What did you do to the panels!" I said "That's deliberately-wrinkled genuine-looking LM skin." She rolled her eyes and walked away, heheh. I guess to the casual viewer it does look like sloppy handiwork and nothing else. johnbuck
And now over to your 1/10 build Crackerjazz : Am lost for superlatives with your scratch-build work...again . Will have to get out the thesaurus to help. This obsession with detail seems to be an occupational hazard of our hobby methinks...thank goodness....'cause it produces work of extraordinary quality such as this. Ahhhh the ladies...they do not understand do they ? Fantastic...... JohnB Edited November 10, 2015 by johnbuck
niart17
WOW! I forgot all about this beautiful work. Still amazed at your scratch building skills. I hope you get back to this one as well. Bill
crackerjazz
Thanks, Bill, John! I think I may have to make a scrum board to prod myself. I sometimes have the time but get overwhelmed as to what to work on that finally I end up doing absolutely nothing. The 1/10's getting lonesome! :) Edited November 5, 2015 by crackerjazz
crackerjazz
Hey, John, thanks! Hey, there's a gentleman from Preston who back in April asked me in RPF where to find LM plans. I then directed him to Vincent Meens' site. He wanted to build an Apollo 13 CSM-LM stack for a Jim Lovell lecture later in the year. The next thing I knew he had sent me a link to a video of the lecture and the stack was actually there - completed in just a matter of 6 months -- while mine is taking years and years and is still half-done. I'll ask him if I can post pics of his build or better yet invite him over. He wants to add more details to it before another lecture in April -- this time by Gene Cernan. johnbuck
That would be great crackerjazz. They would be most interesting to view. Perhaps a link to the video too. Please do pursue it. Cheers johnB
crackerjazz
Hi John! Here are the links. He had my 1/10 thrusters printed -- I can be proud that my thrusters made it to a lecture stage, heheh. But -- get ready for this -- he actually had Vincent Meens' parts printed in 1/10. When I saw those landing gear struts I was blown away. Someone, somewhere in the world, had actually had them printed in 1/10 :) He scratchbuilt various parts using seemingly unearthly skills. His CSM-LM stack is so beautiful it puts my ascent stage to shame. I can only dream of being able to build something like it. The lectures (Jim Lovell and Brian Cox): And here's his RPF thread: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=249894&highlight=apollo+13 And his Collectspace thread. I've invited him to start a build thread here, too so you can see all the build steps. Amazing guy. http://www.collectspace.com/ubb/Foru...ML/001037.html Edited November 11, 2015 by crackerjazz

crackerjazz
Here's Mike's 1/10. I've invited him over so he can post a build thread here because it's just plain awesome! Vincent's plans and printed leg parts. Look at the size of that thing! The stand -- a real work of art! K2Pete
And here's his RPF thread: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=249894&highlight=apollo+13 And his Collectspace thread. I've invited him to start a build thread here, too so you can see all the build steps. Amazing guy. Why is the RPF thread just 1 page ... I wanna see the whole build!! It looks incredible ( I hope he got paid for this build!! ) and I'd love to see his work. And CJ, the Collectspasce link is broken, at least, it displays "Page not Found". Regarding your 1/32 build, I was thinking that replicating the way Kapton looks may be a lost cause, only because the Quads are 'hollow' and the model has a solid face, not allowing the Kapton to hang properly. I'm certain that whichever way you place the foil, it'll will look just the way it's supposed to. Thanx Pete
