mike_espo
Any opinions out there on the best Silver dope linen finish to apply to WWI a/c? I am building the Nieuport 17 in 1/48 with the N124 Lafayette Escadrille markings. I don't like Alclad so would like some alternatives to those.... thanks
vince14
Tamiya Flat Aluminium with a hint of Flat Blue mixed in. Silver dope was made by mixing aluminum powder into clear varnish, the aluminum protecting the fabric from the sun and keeping it from deteriorating. Vince

Just curious: Why the flat blue?
vince14
Just a personal preference really - to my eye the two 'flats' look better under a gloss coat, as opposed to 'one flat and one gloss'. And it's really only a hint of blue, for 1/72 I tend not to bother and just go with flat aluminium as the blue can look somewhat overdone in that scale. Vince
Aaronw
I use Games Workshop Mithril Silver, I paint by brush though, not sure how well the GW paints airbrush.
The Loggie
I, too, use GW mithril sliver (though with GW not using a sub-contractor to produce their paints, it will have a new name) on 72-scale models. I dunno what to suggest for larger scales. I have not tried it, but with thinner, GW paints can be sprayed nicely. George, out......
Don923
On real aircraft fabric work when we use to cover with cotton. first was applied a anti meldew clear coat with somekinds of green copper powered. so when dry the fabric had a green tint to it, next came the silver dope. Maybe that is the reason for the blue tint. Don923(flylo)
peebeep
not sure how well the GW paints airbrush. I don't know about the latest batches of Citizen paints, because they changed supplier, but Mithril Silver used to spray beautifully thinned with a tiny drop of window cleaner. peebeep

Bri2k
I use an aluminum acrylic, Tamiya is my preferred choice. I can't speak to how accurate this is, but I always read about silver dope having aluminum in it. Bri2k
