1/32 Roden Albatros D.III

Recommended Posts

I'm joining in the fun with the Roden 1/32 Albatros D.III - a somewhat less refined kit when compared to the Wingnut Wings Albatros D.V, but it's the only game in town if you want to model one of the Red Baron's earlier aircraft.

Here's a bit of an update. Started by spraying the 'wooden' parts with Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow, then applying MiG Products 502 Abteilung oil paint 'Basic Earth' over the top with a stiff, flat brush;

Here's one half of the fuselage interior painted, with the other waiting to get the oil paint.

All the parts are 'oiled up' - now they have to be set aside for 7-10 days to dry.

Now to crack on with the engine parts!

Here's the components for the engine, seat, fuel tank and guns. The Roden instructions are weak here - if you followed their painting guide the engine would just be aluminium and steel, whereas in real life the engine is a lot more colourful. The fuel tank is painted in Mr. Metal Color 219 Brass and looks terrible in this picture, it looks a lot smoother to the naked eye. The guns were made from the kit parts with Eduard etched metal for the cooling jackets, sights etc and the exhaust was hollowed out. It was then painted with Alclad Steel and then Tamiya Weathering Master pigments were applied. In order it went Rust (Weathering Set B ), Orange Rust (Set C) and Burnt Red (Set D).

More progress...

Engine is nearing completion;

The instructions have you make up the engine bay and ribs, then insert the engine into it. I strongly recommend attaching parts 6A and 9A to the engine block first, then building up the ribs around it - otherwise the oil tank won't fit properly. Fortunately you probably won't be able to see it on the finished model...

The main components for the seat are ready...

And here's the finished article with Eduard belts;

Speaking of Eduard, there are some very small etched parts to attach - the 'switches' shown here are less than 1mm in length..!

Finally, here's the fuselage interior. After the oil paint dried, I airbrushed a 50/50 mix of Tamiya Clear Orange and Clear Yellow over the top. To be honest, this shade of wood is probably too dark for an Albatros, but it'll do for me!

Looking really nice Vince! I hear'ya on the rib assembly. I remember fiddling with that when I buitls my own a couple years back.

What are you going to use for rigging?

:cheers:/>

Probably EZ-Line, and I'm tempted to try out these turnbuckles from GasPatch Models.

So the main colours are on now - the metal areas painted in Xtracrylix 1201 RLM 02, the green, brown and underside blue from the Misterkit range specifically for the Albatros, and the wood fuselage is done with Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow (with various panels lightened/darkened for some variation - these will tone down with subsequent painting).

Next steps are to improve the look of the wings with some post-shading, tone down the wood and get ready for the decals.
