VF-31 tomcats

Recommended Posts

so hears a good one for every body. i will be starting to build tomcats from VF-31 in 1/48 scale and one of them is jet buro number 164342 with the number 100 on the nose and it has black rudders with yellow tips. OK so my question is on the rudders there is a round circle with Felix running with the bomb like the the VF-31 patch. and i have decals for this jet from yellow hammer, cross delta,VF decals, and super scale. so what i want to know is who got the size of the circle right and the shade of the yellow right. because the cross delta sheet looks darker than the other shades of yellow used on the yellow hammer and VF sheet

Don't quote me on this but I "THINK" Brian mentioned that there may be an issue with his decal sheet (VF decals) regarding those markings you mention. Again, not 100% sure but I do recalled him discussing something like this in this/another forum? You may want to PM him (or wait for him to chime in) to confirm.

You can toss out both the Yellowhammer and Superscale decals. Never seen the Cross Delta but they look really good. Can't comment on color. VFdecals is great.

When we Fightertown Decals gets around to printing VF-31 Last Cruise/Sunset, I can promise you incredibly accurate decals. We've switched over to FS color printing and improved on the already excellent work Mike did for VF

OK so hear is why i am asking is. i have 2 VF-31 projects that i want to do.

1 do the life of tomcat buro number 164603 from the earliest markings i have for it all the way to the way it looks siting in front of the Northrop Grumman plant now.

2 my second project is to build the 4 tomcats that were at the 2006 NAS oceana air show and the tomcat sunset ceremony. these jets are from VF-31 are black and yellow tail jet number 100 buro number 164342, then flying pencil with the red rudder markings jet number 101 buro number 164603, then hi viz retro jet with the color tomcat logo on the rudders jet number 103 buro number 164350. and the last jet is in the normal TPS low viz colors with the tomcat logo on the rudders jet number 102 buro number is 163904.

so how i will model them is how they appeared at the event and how they are now on display. the sheets i will use are from super scale fighter town VF decals and cross delta and yellow hammer. so let me know what you think of this idea?

I think the error had to do with the shape of the CVW-8 crest which goes on the inside of the vertical stabilizers. They should be equilateral triangles but came out as isosceles triangles on the sheet.

Gonna back up what Brian is saying here. Brian and I had talked about the redo of the VF sheet, which in itself was a great sheet. However, with FT's improvements I know it will be the balls.

There were a few errors concerning the color jets (100 and 101).

For 100, the CVW-8 triangels were not correctly shaped, of course 2-piece decals for some of the markings

For 101, the red used is a little too brown, although on the art it looks correct.

Of course, the line jet portion of the sheet is flawless, but my dream for the redo is to have ALL of the jets from the last cruise done as it was originally intended to be, but that will be completely up to Brian and Mike.

Brian....gravy there's too many Brian's in this thread.. :P

Thrilled to hear that FT is doing a VF-31 sheet. I just hope that there will be one or two OIF-Cruise options available (especially with the 10year-anniversary coming up), since there is NO acurate option available so far.

BTW, ever thought about doing some TARPS-decals to go with the markings?

Greets,

Daniel

The VF sheet is very accurate (minus the corrections needed for the color jets) and all the jets featured were from the last combat cruise.

If you were building tomcatter 100, the use of the CVW-8 badges can be used from other sheets available. The rest of the markings are spot on.

if a new version of the VF-31 sheet is going to come out then i can wait with my tomcat project because i whant them to be right

Let me clarrify a bit.

The VF sheet is "right" and like I said, the only thing that needs to be replaced is the CAG 8 badges for tomcatter 100. Of which can be used from other sheets, but it's your perogative to wait for FT's updated version. The 2 piece markings are more of an inconvenience, but the sheet is accurate. Tomcatter 101 is pretty much the same way, but the tail markings definitely need replacing.

Having said that, like you, I'd be inclined to wait but if the line jets are what you're after, the ones the VF sheet are completely correct.

Brown is what you're looking for.

Btw, I was looking over your project post and I'm re-evaluating some things.

Since you're building the 4 tomcats at the 2006 Oceana airshow, the VF sheet is NOT what you need. The VF sheet is strictly last COMBAT cruise jets.

You will need the Cross Delta sheet for Tomcatter's 100 and 101 and also 103 in the retirement scheme. CD's sheet covers the jets in the retirement schemes they were in at the airshow.

For the line jet (can't recall which one was there) you're going to need the Yellow Hammer sheet that covers the line jets after the awards appeared on the tails, but their stencil data is all wrong.

1 do the life of tomcat buno number 164603 from the earliest markings i have for it all the way to the way it looks siting in front of the Northrop Grumman plant now.

I actually have this idea in my head as well. 164603 was delivered in 92 to VF-124, then it was transferred to VF-2 a couple of years later. Then, it was transferred to VF-213 in 98 and flew as the CO jet (Modex 101) during OEF. After, it was transferred to VF-101, then finally onto VF-31.

Now, I have 164603 already built as Modex 101 from VF-213 (TwoBobs "Rampant Lions Over Afghanistan" sheet), I'm currently building 164603 when it was with VF-31, during the final F-14 cruise (using VF-Decals). TwoBobs has another sheet with this jet on it (F-14D Tomcats Last Pac), which I plan to build later on. If you've got "Tomcat Alley", by David F. Brown, there is a photo of 164603 in the markings it wore when it was with VF-2. Now, I don't know if decals are available for that scheme. Other than that, I just need to find a photo of the VF-124 markings and VF-101 markings it wore, and I'm all set!

Plus it will be an all "AJ" tail coded sheet therefore a guaranteed winner for sales!!!!<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Just saying.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Psstttt VFA-15........<img src="http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif" alt="" class="bbc_emoticon"></div>

Modex 100, 101, 102 and 105 were the 4 at the show that took the final bow, -2 and -5 were line jets, not sure on the bureau numbers.

Colin, I believe this picture shows the VF-2 jet you refer to...

I'm an F-14 decal collector and unfortunately these markings have not been offered by any manufacturer yet. Will keep you updated if I ever find them !!

Or you could wait until US Nats for the Fightetown Decals VF-31 sheet covering every last cruise jet and special sunset markings jets (minus 102 which is on 48008 and 103 color)...

Will post images this week!

Brian

If the tail art decals for Tomcatter 101 will fit the Revell F-14 tails in 48th scale, I'll wait. Went to apply the ones from the VF Decal sheet, and they are too small for the Revell tails. :bandhead2:
