Nat Geo spotlights the PJs!

Recommended Posts

Does the Army still have their DUSTOFF choppers? I ask because the PJ show on Nat Geo shows the Air Force doing all the medevacs. The other question, what is it that's being sounded on the loud speaker when a mission call comes in? I can't make out what's being said.

Yeah, Army is performing Medivac in Afganistan. They split missions according to location and availibility. I can't understand the call either.

I have been watching this show eagerly, but I can't answer your questions. I'm responding to brag just a little. One of the guys in this unit (and appearing in the show) is now a cousin-in-law of sorts and I had a chance to do something for him that makes me proud when I watch the show. Here is a picture and the story (that I previously posted on a deer hunting website):

I wanted to share this with you because I know you all will get what I’m talking about. I didn’t shoot a buck this year myself (3 doe in the freezer though) but I still had a top season because of the weekend I took someone else hunting.

My wife’s cousin brought her boyfriend, Chris, through town before Thanksgiving, and they stayed in my guest house. He is an Air Force PJ. After a deployment to Afghanistan, they were on their way to Georgia for a new posting. He saw some European mounts I have in my guest house and mentioned that he was interested in deer hunting; he had bought a rifle and knocked about on some family land in North Carolina, but had never killed one. I don’t often invite folks I just met hunting, but I had a good feeling about Chris and I figured he deserved it. I extended the invitation and he took me up on it.

We got him out for a weekend hunt. After a quiet afternoon, the next morning he had the kind of hunt I was hopeful he would have. He shot his first deer ever, a doe, at 7:20 in the morning. I heard him shoot and then he sent me a text letting me know. It was a cold morning and he said she was down within view of the stand, so I texted back and told him to stay on stand and see what else came through.

At 9:00 he had his second deer on the ground within view of the stand – an 8-point buck! A look at the deer’s teeth suggested he was old, and the taxidermist thought he may have been quite old and past his prime.

It was a great brace of deer! The guys back at the cabin were sure to let Chris know how ruined he was by being tagged out by 9:00 a.m., with no blood trails to follow and hardly time to have gotten cold or bored on the stand.

It was nice for me to have had the opportunity to do this for Chris. I have learned the true pleasure of putting someone on their first deer. And having the opportunity to do something for someone in the service of our Nation made this a remarkable experience for me. Chris made it a true pleasure by taking in the experience with enthusiasm.

Thanks Hoss! Maybe not me so much, but I do think it was an awesome thing I got to do for him. He is a great guy and it was a bunch of fun in woods. It truly was a pleasure, but I am very proud of having seized the opportunity to have done this to pay him back just a little bit. I'm with you; these folks deserve every bit of praise and thanks we can give. I sent Chris a text with your question. I'll report back if I get an answer.

Okay, here is Chris' answer on the alert call:

"It is saying 'Leroy Jenkins'. Its a famous youtube video of a world of warcraft game where Leroy charges headfirst into mayhem. Seemed appropriate for mission alerts."

Famous perhaps for a younger generation but there you have it!

The Army has been airlifting battlefield injuries/casualties in choppers since Korea, you just gotta know they ain't about to give up their choppers and let the USAF take over that duty. UH..UH..ain't gonna happen, not with all those still airworthy Blackhawks they got flying around.

From a vet, Thank you......folks like you are appreciated, and are the reason those who served, serve, and will serve pick up the banner and step forward

It's a team effort, I'm actually glad to see there is no inter-service rivalry doing on over a critical mission like this. The AF PJ's were pretty damned impressive (with regard to their medical skills). I wonder if the Army Dustoff medics are trained to the same standard?

Regarding Fulcrum's post, what is the difference between MEDEVAC and CASEVAC? Thought they were the same thing.

On a related note, there has been some controversy regarding the Army's longstanding policy to fly Dustoff missions unarmed. A couple of congressmen have launched inquires after Dustoff helos were delayed because they required Apache escorts, which supposedly led to the death of a wounded solider. One blogger in particular has been very critical of this policy, said delays are frequent due to the need for armed escorts on each flight and strongly suggests that the Army revise it's policy, especially since none of our enemies over the last 50 years have respected the red cross markings on these helos.

The AF PAVEHAWKs don't seem to have that issue (at least on most missions, maybe it changes if they have to go into an extremely hot LZ) since, as shown in the show, they are heavily armed with .50 cals. I'm pretty sure the Brits and the Marines also used armed helos for MEDEVAC missions, not sure why the Army persists w/ this policy.

Tough show to watch. Really brings home the cost of the war seeing US service members horribly wounded. A bit different from watching youtube clips of drone strikes or what passes for "news" on the local networks (which seem to have forgotten this conflict entirely).

It is basically a paramedic ambulance vs a fast van with a care giver.

Medevac are dedicated medical helicopters fully equipped and staffed for the mission, Casevac is taking the closest available helicopter to scoop up the wounded and get them to definitive care. Casevac helicopters are multi mission.

To answer your question on what is being said over the loud speaker …scramble scramble scramble.

Well I may have been confused, but I think the original question was about the computer voice alert that sounds when the call comes in before the guy gets on the PA and says 'scramble'. Check post #7 for more info. You are correct though, the next call out on the PA is 'scramble'.

You're correct WADEOCU but Helo Dud was helping out. I do hope they put that entire series on DVD to buy, I think there's 6 episodes.

Indeed - I hope that didn't come across as being ugly, I certainly didn't mean for it to be. Just enjoying the conversation and following along with it. Apologies to Helo Dud if that came across as jumping on you. Far be it for me to pass comment on taking this thread in a different direction because I was the first (and only) to do so!

The DVD would be on my to buy list as well so I hope they put it out too! These guys perform most impressively and it's about time the media at large covered the work of our military in a positive light!
