UH-60 rotor blade tip cap

Recommended Posts

I always knew the tip caps on hawks were swept back, but now I'm seeing them swept down. What's the reason for that versus the old style and when did they start using them. Also anybody have some close up pics of them? Just curious!

Like 'winglets' and 'sharklets' for airliner wings, the tip curvature and up/down sweep of helicopter rotors can make a big difference in terms of airfoil efficiency. Scimitar-shaped tips have appeared on recent Sikorsky and Eurocopter designs that feature upward and downward sweep as well as swept tips and short sections that are effectively forward-swept. Here's Mitubishi's blade tip for the SH-60Kai:

Are the Mikes the same Gino? It almost looks like the Kai almost has kind of a raised "kink" before the downsweep, whereas the Mike looks like it is straight and then goes down, with no kink in the transition.
