hawkwrench Posted April 18, 2013 Share Posted April 18, 2013 I always knew the tip caps on hawks were swept back, but now I'm seeing them swept down. What's the reason for that versus the old style and when did they start using them. Also anybody have some close up pics of them? Just curious! Quote Link to post Share on other sites

RotorheadTX Posted April 18, 2013 Share Posted April 18, 2013 Like 'winglets' and 'sharklets' for airliner wings, the tip curvature and up/down sweep of helicopter rotors can make a big difference in terms of airfoil efficiency. Scimitar-shaped tips have appeared on recent Sikorsky and Eurocopter designs that feature upward and downward sweep as well as swept tips and short sections that are effectively forward-swept. It almost looks like the Kai almost has kind of a raised "kink" before the downsweep, whereas the Mike looks like it is straight and then goes down, with no kink in the transition.
