Dragon 1/72 Saturn V

Recommended Posts

Well, I guess I haven't been paying attention to what I'm doing lately. Turns out my Krylon was actually Rustoleum lacquer. But in the meantime, I'm ready to start painting, so I didn't want to take chances and just went with Tamya paints. I did find an online source and saves quite a bit over all the major online retailers. Check out Advantage Hobby Club if you ever need Tamiya spray bombs.

WooHoo...got the Real Space batted F-1 engines and a 3D printed launch escape tower. The 3D LUT backdrop came and is amazing as is the MLP. Ikea in Tempe, Az has the Detolf glass cabinets in stock so I'm probably leaving the 26th to go pick up 2 of those. Then hopefully...I can get "rockin" on my rocket!! Merry Christmas to all...in 1968 Apollo 8 was about to enter lunar orbit.

That is beautiful.

I have had one on order since August, but the current production run is sold out pretty much everywhere in the US. You really can't get one unless you want to pony up big bucks and order one from Asia.

Supposedly the next production run will be arriving in late January, but I will believe it when I see it. Right now they are getting ready to push the new Saturn V Skylab release.

The thrust structure and narrow F-1 engines are the biggest issues. The kit had such potential. Why Dragon didn't do a little more basic research is beyond me. They have such advanced mold making machines, but they can't secure a set of readily available drawings? Just amazing.

Still, on the whole, a lot more good than bad. It sure looks nice built up.

My final impressions of the kit? The instructions were horrible! No actual placement of the external details in the parts. It's all a crap shoot with looking at online photos and saying "OK, this looks good here." and then proceeding to drill holes to mount things. I did add one major detail between the 1st and 2nd stage. The body or section that joins them has external rings that appear to be bare metal in all the NASA photos I found on line. I simply used small square stock to build these and then covered them with bare metal foil after painting.

And I have no good recommendations on getting tape to stick down other than run a guide line above or below where you want the actual line and then using the backside of a panel line engraver, press the tape down into the cracks and crevices and then follow up with the edge of a credit card. before spraying the black, I shot a coat of white to "fill in" any gaps that would let black under the tape. it seemed to help somewhat. But expect a lot of brush touch ups after un-taping it.

I have built this model also. Before I thought about authenticity much. I am now going back and adding minor bits'n'pieces.

Batted engines from Realspace to start with and a better decal set when I find one.

Maybe I'll redo the LM later with a different model? I've also bought a shapeways LES tower. More detail than original

OMG the instructions are crap. The decals too. Did any of you have mold release film by the butt load on theirs?

My fingers got all slippery just handling the parts. Wash and wash again.
