Best Su-27 / Flanker family reference book?

Recommended Posts

The best one currently available is Yefim Gordon's ....... 'Sukhoi Su-27'

It was published in 2007 - so doesn't include the latest Su-35S, Su-34, Su-30SM etc.

It is also out of print(?) - so is getting expensive.

A cheaper option is the Squadron Signal book - but that is quite lightweight.

There aren't many published photos of operational Flankers - Gordon's book has a chapter on operational Flankers, but current stuff is difficult to find in published form.

There is also a book (Vol 2 in the Red Star series) - again by Yefim Gordon - called 'Flankers - The New Generation' - but it was published in 2001, so is now old hat.

Hope this helps....

Ken, ain't the Andrei Fomin's Su-27 book considered much better than Gordon's?

It's probably better technically than Gordon's - after all it was 'sponsored' by Sukhoi.

But it was published in 2000 - Gordon's book is 2007 - and incorporates more of the later developments.

As a one-stop-shop for Flankers, with more photos and drawings etc, the later book is probably better buy for a newbie to the wonderful world of Flankering.

But both are now way out of date - six years at least - so we need an update.

I've got Ildar Bedretdinov's 'Su-27 Fighter - Beginning of Story' - in fact I helped proof-read and 'Anglicise' the English translation.

This is very technical - probably too much so - but it is very in-depth and tells the story of the early development history and throws some fascinating insights into the way in which the T10 evolved.

It is a very interesting read - but it only takes the story up to the flight of the first prototypes.

There is a second volume in Russian - but unfortunately, there are no plans to have it translated AFAIK.

I have lost contact with Ildar - we had a few beers at MAKS some years ago, but nothing since then.
