Saw on the news earlier of a US cargo plane crash at Bahram air base in Afganistan. All 5 aboard killed were from Michigan. Any one know if it was a Kalitta Air plane? I worked for Connie as Maintenance controller many years ago. Thoughts and prayers out to family members.

Um which crash are you talking about? There was a 747 with 7 people on board that crashed...possible load shift, and then also a MC-12 by Kandahar with 4. Nothing with 5 unless it Just happened.....

J

The 747 had a total of 9 on board with 5 being from Michigan.

That was the most sickening thing I have ever seen. RIP to the brave crew of that aircraft. We honor our Veterans, but sometimes we forget that there are a lot of civilians who also sacrifice a lot for the war effort. They may seem like highly paid civilian contractors, but I know from personal experience that they were not and they just made the ultimate sacrifice. God rest their souls.

Initial word seems to be that the aircraft was carrying a load of vehicles which somehow broke loose and rolled rear, creating an extreme aft CG which led to a stall.

As others have said, horrifying. Whatever one may think of the war over there, this was seven guys just trying to make a living. Terrible... sad.

Found out on FB that one of the crew was a student at the flight school I used to teach at. He wasn't one of my students but quite a few friends trained him. It's another unfortunate and close to home reminder that flying is a serious job. RIP Jamie and your fellow crewmates.

Well, look at the bright side (if there is a bright side). The impact angle and rate of descent means they were likely killed instantly before the fireball consumed them (the fuselage flattened like a beer can). But I can imagine it was sheer terror in the cockpit as the nose pointed skyward and pushing the control yokes forward did NOTHING for the 23 seconds from the problem first popping up until impact itself!

What a waste. All that so we could bring a few unwanted MRAP's or Humvee's back, just to have them sit stateside and rust away.

As far as a "bright side" to this tragedy, the only thing that comes to mind is that the aircraft at least missed impacting into a residential area. That video was truly disturbing. Does tend to support the unsecured load theory. Looks like the aircraft went out of control nose up, stalled and went straight in. Wonder if it was human error due to improperly securing of the load or some sort of material failure either of the restraint or the aircraft?

My biggest fear every day I load an aircraft.... Fear is good because I check it all myself. There is a total of 96 years of experience on my crew and it is just a a natural thing for us to double check each others work. Locks secured is not taken lightly..... a load shift is very bad. That aircraft had to have a significant shift to have that issue..... I figure the Load on the Pallets might have broken loose which would have caused a catastrophic situation.

Very disturbing Video.... Always respected the 747.

My heartfelt condolences to the families, I hope the cause is found and procedures are improved.

This reminds me of the C-130 that went down fighting that forest fire years ago. Just as awful to watch when it swoops into the valley and then the wings fold up like it's on a carrier. Ugh
