Sauragnmon
Before anybody mentions, I was all but laughed out of J-Aircraft's forum for asking this question, because it involves What If concepts. Anyways, back to the information at hand. Does anybody have profiles or information regarding the markings for the squadrons that were embacked on Taiho during her service life? I've got a multiple-models themed build on the books, to back up a Shinano that I built a short time ago. The story goes with Shinano's "auxiliary carrier" theory being thrown out for a necessity of full blown Carriers once she gets finished. The airgroup consists as follows: C6N2 Saiun-Kai - The core reconnaisance element of the airgroup, they're in play to scout out and locate enemy warships. B7A Ryusei - These are serving primarily as the torpedo bomber airgroup, though still not numerous enough to work alone. D4Y Suisei - Still serving as dive bombers, the D4Y is the secondary strike wing, supplementing the B7As. J7W Shinden - These are the fighter element of the aircraft compliment. I realized the answer to the hook question lay in the location - you can't stick it on the tails because it might get shredded by the prop, but you CAN fix it further forward on the fuselage so it hangs under the midsection - this would keep the cable from hitting the prop as well, and would only really work owing to the tricycle undercarriage - a tail-dragger would slam nose-first into the deck the second the hook fully engaged, but with a strong enough nose gear, the fuselage hook would work just fine. The reason I want to use the squadron markings off Taiho, is that especially for the B7A, the only other carrier that could operate the massive B7A was the Taiho, so my theory is that the squadron was converted over from the B6N to B7A training just before Taiho got sunk with a temporary second squadron taking the attack bomber role while the original squadron was in conversion training, so the group, as a whole, was redeployed aboard Shinano. Sauragnmon
Alright, so I did a little extra looking, and it seems that only the 601st Kokutai was assigned to Taiho at the time she was sunk... as well as Shokaku and Zuikaku. They seem to have been broken into smaller units in early '44, so that, I guess, is the key to the whole thing... is which squadrons came out of the 601st Kokutai - the 601 included all types of aircraft, so multiple squadrons would have been formed.
