1945-era Carrier Air Wing WHIF

Recommended Posts

Alright, my previous attempt was obviously too narrow in thinking. I know the IJNAF went through a number of changes during the war, so I'll be a little broader in my attempts to find means to add to/improve the models I have on hand.

What I'm looking for are Carrier Squadrons that were operating during the '45 era. I know they had been moved off the few surviving carriers in 44, so I'm looking for the ones that were last to move. What I'm looking for are:

General Information - Tail/Fuselage band code explanations, Tail numbers, extra markings to add to the models.

Fighter Squadron - I've already done a J7W in Green over Metal, so I'm thinking of doing this one in Zero-style Off-White. I'm looking for a squadron that operated Carrier fighters. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to actually model the hook, which will be fuselage-mounted not tail-mounted, so it doesn't get chewed up by the prop.

Attack Squadron - Much as I would like to, I'm having a hard time finding squadrons that operated the B7A - I know they were primarily land-based at the time, maybe I'll convert over a B6N squadron being deployed to Shinano's CAG. B7A will be dark green over metal, like she was when she flew.

Dive Squadron - I've got a D4Y3 to add to the group, since the B7A still didn't get a lot of production, I figure the D4Y3 would be used to supplement the B7A in the dive bomber role.

Recon Squadron - I'm not sure if there actually Were any that got to the Carriers, but I'm planning on having a C6N Scout plane unit as part of the CAG.

In general I'm looking for squadrons with interesting markings from the IJNAF, that operated either the aircraft in question or comparable units (I know the J7W never flew, late A6M squadrons would apply in this case.)

...I'm thinking of doing this one in Zero-style Off-White.

If you mean early war Zeros, then doing it off-white would be inappropriate, since the 'off white' color we've "known" was "correct" for 70+ years was never put on a Zero. The early A6M2s were a greyish green color, not dissimilar to German RLM 02. Loads and loads of new research on this in recent years, and Tamiya even came out with the correct color when they did their 1/32 A6M2 kit a few years ago.

Thankyou for the correction. While I'm not sure if I could find a use for it elsewhere, I'll avoid buying the Tamiya paint and opt for another solution. I know I can't do the broken green over metal scheme because that was Army camouflage, so I guess if I want to stay accurate-ish, Green over Grey or Green over NMF would be more suitable. Leaves me hoping I can find a IJNAF fighter squadron with some neat tail art I guess.
