I hate it when media does this. Leads in with a sensationalist headline like "US Navy Drops Bombs on Great Barrier Reef" and then FINALLY get to the real story of unarmed bombs being jettisoned in an emergency situation somewhere "away" from the GBR. Idiots...

Sadly, most all of the major media outlets these days think that only sensationalism will garner viewers. Also sadly, is the fact that they're probably correct, as a majority of people don't like to think very hard or ferret out actual facts on their own.

never a more accurate statement given all that has taken this week all over the country because of a lack of facts provided by the media...now they want to legislate based on inaccurate reporting and willful disregard for facts

We HAD to bomb it, Navy Captains got tired of having their ships go around.......

UPDATE......

We have to do it again with more bombs, the hole isn't big enough for the carriers....and subs.

Hahahahaha I loved that movie. Had some elements from classics, like "Manos: The Hands of Fate" and "Curse of the Swamp Creature" written all over it.

Take care,

Austin

Hahahaha! Classic film. It had that guy from 90210 in it.

Just in case you haven't seen it...

No, everything is fine down my end of the country. Saying that, apart from a few lightly damaged buildings there doesn't seem to be much damage in the area that the quake occurred either.

I would say we are lucky, however in 2010 after the first Christchuch earthquake, everyone said how lucky it was that not many people were hurt. Then of course 6 months later there was another, this time much worse.

Thanks for asking!

this story was on Fark.com twice, both this one and the "oh ok we concede that headline was garbage" version. Many military people tried to explain (in vain) the procedures for dumping ordnance and how frighteningly normal this all was.

And its Greens MP winging as well. Next the USN will be ramming their ships against the coral destroying it according too this lady.

Hmm...it s not so unrealistic, USN mine sweeper hit Tubataha Reef in Philippines and destroyed a lot of the corals! So why not not GBR too? :monkeydance:

LOL! Love the pic.

You should have heard the radio interview! You had the Commander of the 7th Fleet being grilled but someone who clearly new nothing about the military let alone ordnance and when he answered her questions with responses that clearly showed how benign the situation was she just brushed over them with general statement/questions like, "...yes but what do you say to all the people clearly concerned about the environmental destruction this could have caused?" It was as if he hadn't said anything. Just plain ignored his answers. It was absolutely INFURIATING! And this was on ABC (equivalent to your NPR).

Just imagine the riots that would break out if it was reported the a Panda Bear stubbed it's toe on the coral reef during the "attack".......
