Brian Shul and the SR-71

Recommended Posts

And I love how you trot out the ol' Why don't you join the military? You know what. You guys who like to trot out that old horse are a dime a dozen, OK?

For what its worth I think you would have done great in the military, right up to the point where you decided to invade Russia in 1812.

NANPA, anything like NAMBLA?

Listen, paying dues or not, you still have to have a decent eye for photography and capture something different than everyone else. Apparently Maj Shul did that and p*$$ed off some people because he did it while on the job. I've taken thousands of photos while in the air. It's a perk of the job and as long as I dont violate regs, I'm golden. Personally I see a crap-ton of aviation photographers making their name on the backs of a lot of military aviators. They catch "media" hops while not actually being true media and sell their stuff as quick as possible to a magazine, before the next guy gets the scoop.

Animal, you calling him out as a wannabe is plain wrong. Because he hasnt met your standards and paid some mysterious dues, you beat him down? BTW, what dues? Putting out crappy, blurred distance shots for 7-8 years until he could afford a decent camera rig?

Having the best camera gear doesnt make you a great photog. 9 out of 10 times its pure luck to have been some place to capture that great image.

My $.02

Fulcrum1 write: What parade is that? I'm just discounting what you say because you seemed pretty worked up about someone else's success and that he doesn't meet your or one of your buddies approval means he's nothing. Why is it in certain fields like Astronomy, Cycling, Photography, anything really niche you get people who are take elitism to a whole new level of snobbery?

I'm an amateur cyclist amateur photographer that works for the military and has had published photos mostly of cycling races. What does that make me? :-) Actually I don't care. I do what I do for fun. Sometimes I get lucky and get a shot that matches the subject that someone wants and likes. Meh.

I don't know much about the SR-71 except its an uber cool plane. I don't know much about nature photography professionals except I like the shots I like. For my reasons. I don't know much about criticizing others except that I would never do what Animal has done here. Bad form in my opinion. You just look bitter and jealous.

Continue having FUN making model airplanes boys.

I've had to work my way up from scratch too. Does that mean that I didn't bring my A game without the best gear? And no, it isn't wrong to call him out since he's making claims that he can't match of being a "acclaimed nature photographer".

All I'm saying is that you don't tout yourself as an acclaimed wildlife photographer. People will laugh. Now, I'm done here. I just got back from shooting and I don't have time to waste dealing with people who want to yap at me about calling him out legitimately. There are things you don't do. Don't impersonate being acclaimed when you're not. It just gets the people who work hard at what they do ****** off.

I don't think I can laugh any harder, really.

I'm not the one touting myself as acclaimed, am I? And frankly, with regards to your picture of Joe Rosenthal, he was a news photographer and that's fine. He was right there in the line of fire and has a well recommended credential of news photos, but he never...ever proclaimed himself as an acclaimed photographer of another genre when he wasn't.

I'm sorry did I write anything about him being a nature photographer?? I posted that pic in response to "being in the right place at the right time."

Edit: I just want to emphasize that at no point did I imply that some combat newsie like Rosenthal was a guild-approved, modern, bazooka-sized-telephoto-lens equipped elite nature photographer.

Who needs "Bravo" when you've got "The Real Housewives of A.R.C." right here....

"I'm an acclaimed wildlife photographer" vs. "I've flown the worlds fastest jet"

It'd be fun to see which got a better reaction - oh, just about anywhere.

Wow...

All this banter about nature photography...I felt compelled to see if Animal would critique these shots from the Sprint Boat U.S Nationals this last weekend in Long Beach.

Up until this bird found the intake of the 500cid Chevy, this boat was in the lead for the overall win. A bad day for all concerned!

All digital I see.

If you note, most of Brian Shul's work was back in the age of FILM. You had to get it right the first time. I started in film and slides too.

I think that pays up his dues as a photog. Acclaimed or not.

Brian,

I like your photography. The lighting and angles truly bring out the theme of Man's role within nature. Note the two fish facing forward with one other facing the camera. It's all very symbolic, really, of one's paradigm and self-actualization of the socio-economic destruction of the industrial world on the working class. It's very reminiscent of collective works of Jean-Claud Pierre, Gregory Stoczy, Carmine Andollini and a bunch of other names I made up but sound very impressive. I couldn't help but notice you used a 55mm f/3.14*r/h but did you use the thermographic flux capacitor to capture the subtle hues? I suppose it doesn't matter since whatever I've got is far superior to whatever you've got. I know this because peers in my field have told me so and I spent last night in a Holiday Inn Express.

Best wishes,

Eric

(PS: This will probably get me ostracized so I'll just say right here and now that it was nice knowing all of you.)

I present to you my masterpiece. I call it....Death of a Salmon.

Bah - show me something other than some bloated fish and a raggedy old boat half obscured by fish blood and guts and then I'll say you're acclaimed.
