F15A and D dual build (65th Agressor & IDF Baz)

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

After some F15 builds, i decided, to continue on this way. I have some other eagle projects planned, so it is the next turn, to bring some of them to reality.

First i began to work on the Academy kit. It is a newly boxed C/D version, no. 12257. The kit is the old one, upgraded with some newly tooled parts, and maybe new decals. But it is basicly the same as the old ones, with the same mistakes.

I planned this bird to become a desert flanker agressor in the 65th Agressor squadron of Nellis AFB. So i made my decal and stencil sheet out of my former decal plans. It is not the final version, but close enough for first row.

Than began to work on the cockpit upgarding, the fuselage and gears detailing.

20130808_233210.jpg

Then finished the cabin for this one, with some painting and some home made decals. After that all things snapped together

The other kit is the old italeri F-15 A/C one. The build method is mainly the saem as the other one. Just want to upgrade it with some scrathbuilding, and to become an early Israeli Air Force one seater Baz. Early, because don't want to change the missiles. It seems it is a pin in the a.... to get the necessary upgrade parts for the Python missiles, and that is too much work to make them from schratch.

So the plan is to make the bird look like a Baz no. 673. in the early years. 1981 to be exact, when it shot down a MIG-25, and so became one of the two aircrafts, which got this type of MIG kill.

First the ejection seat modification. The kit provides an ACES II seat, but the israeli F-15-s are using (especially the first ones) were using an older ESCAPAC seat. So i have cut the seat into pieces, and make it look like that one. After a coat of black paint, it looked like the one i wanted.

After that the cabin well and IP-s were next. The kits IP-s are only flat surfaces with decals, but i don1t like this solution. So i have decided to upgrade it with other leftover IP panels from other kits (Academy for example), and snapped it together.

Then continued with the elecronics bay upgrade and some correction.

Finally both of them glued together with the fuselage and main wings. After that tons of putty was appplied. Now i have to wait some days, and begin the most boring and hated part of the builds. Filling and sanding........

For some unknown reason, i wasn't able to wiev the site for more than a month. :tumble: But the build had to go on. Both birds had got some upgrades, and got to prime painting.

Beofre that both planes got some riveting, and scribing. The baz was fitted with a pair of CFT-s from another old Academy kit, what resulted a huge work of filling a sanding. :( But at last i think i have won. Got his paint, and some soft weathering, before decalling. Decals are homemade, for the BAZ No. 673, in the early 90's with an anniversary painting (the blue ribbon on the stabilizers).

The agressors filling is finished also, and just waiting for his base paint.

Thx Captain. The build is rolling slowly, and one of the eagles is just at the finish line. When i began this build, i wouldnt thnik, that the israeli eagle will be the first at this stage. But let the photos speak:

Decalling stage, with my homemade decals an stencils, along with some others from an academy sheet.

The exhaust got some plus details inside.

Going forward with metal painting plus some work with tamiya weathering pastels.

And this is how it looks now. I have to finish the cockpit and its cover, the rockets (bombs are already fininshed), and the intake + grill covers along with some homemade RBF flags. After these steps, this half of the project will be finished.

Great looking Eagles Yso! What program do you use to create your artwork for the decals (which look awesome by the way!)?

Steve

Thx Steve. I use now simply a CAD program (eg. AutoCAD) for the decalling. Want to change later for some vektor based graphics one. This can't work good with soft color tones. But i always try to manage this problem.

THX Guys. New photos are posted in the galery section.

Ian Cooper: i use a Sofix brand floor polish. this is like an acrylic base gloss varnish. I use this brand as a substitute for the so called Future. ( Which we cannot get in Hungary. :( ) For a price of two or three bottles of modelling varnish, i got a lifetime supply of this floor polish. :D

After "finishing" my MIG-29UB, i have returned to this project, to fully clear my workbench, before starting others.

Some more sanding and filling needed after his accident. I couldn't repair all the damages, what happened with this birdie, but managed to do the majority of them. After that some base paint spraying, and some white and grey color applying happened to the small parts. (Plus for the missiles for the MIG build)

20131227_184331_zps131f52ff.jpg

20131227_141556_zps19914b42.jpg

Then made some pre-shading (sadly they vanished mainly under the base paint, but will highlight them again with post-shading later, how i did with the MIG)

20131229_214847_zps7d5eb9eb.jpg

Created the camouflage map for this birdie, then printed out, and used it as a guide for paint border marking.

And finally, made the base scheme today.

The build is progressing slowly.

First the nose cone needed some correction. Had to sand down the paint and correct the surface, then repaint it with a little lighter gray.

20131231_165637_zps86a3fa40.jpg

The surface was polished back a little with a 8000grade polishing cloth.

20131231_165647_zpsd5181680.jpg

On a photo i have seen two dummy amraams on the plane, and decided to make them for my build too. So I have searched my stash, and made some detailing on two old missiles.

20140101_110758_zpsc1701ece.jpg

Painting and weathering continues.

I have made my decal sheet as usual, and began decalling.

The decalling is almost done. (on the upper side, the lower is plain and empty at the moment, but will do it later...) Plus i have "done" the wing's pylons, to see how the load will look when finished. (They are temporary attached to the wings)

After finishing all the decals, will apply a clear varnish, then a matte one for final finish. For last the metal painting and the burner cans will be done.
