Remodelling a finished kit.

Recommended Posts

Was thinking of the possibility of altering an already built kit, say if you got the inclination to do another version simply because you wanted to.

I guess most of us never even contemplate messing with a finished kit, but it just came to me that this may well be doable. It may be tedious to change any of the interior bits, but certainly do another paint scheme and/or retrofitting the kit for another version. So, anyone ever tried this?

Every now and then I will. This is mostly with kits that I was never really satisfied with though. And even then, I find myself going into the process half-heartedly. There's just something about a sharp, fresh new model that is more appealing to me than doing salvage work.

Most of the work I do involves messing with finished kits, just like you described. The thing is though, these kits are ones that I build years ago and didn't do a very good job on. I usually cut them apart, strip the paint of with oven cleaner and put them back together just like a brand new kit. The only things I usually change about the kit are markings and payload.

I´ve done it with kits I like very much but I´m not pleased with the results, pretty much old kits built years ago. Depending on the previews work it´s the mess you make and elbow grease you spend.

Just take a look at this

Was worth the restoration!

Yep, fairly often. Often easier than starting a new kit, takes much less time and definitely cheaper! A good soak with oven cleaner and scrubbing with a toothbrush takes off the old paint down to the bare plastic. Can be very satisfying! I've got a few Tomcats left with the paint stripped awaiting new paint schemes right now. I actually enjoy it!

I'll be the contrarian here.

I never re-do an old kit. With well over a hundred unbuilt kits in the stash and dozens of new releases coming out every year there are too many projects that cry out for my time and excite me more. Once a kit's done, it's done. If it's a POS, hopefully I've learned a lesson.
