Douglas
Hi guys, I am curious to know if there is any rear view mirror on P-51D Mustang. It looks there is no, why ? Is it because of the clear window there is no problem seeing the rear ? Regards, Douglas
Neo
As far jas i know some mustangs had some installed on top of the windscreen. They where round ones.
rustywelder
It seems to change airframe to airframe. Some had no mirror many had one and a few had two. It is really one of those things where you need a pic of what ever aircraft you are working on.
G.R.Morrison
To echo, it varies. Check out the 8th Air Force Mustang galleries on "Little Friends" http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php None, singles, or twin mirrors. GRM
Jennings
Lots of Mustangs in the ETO had Spitfire mirrors installed. The hemispherical mirror housing is the Sptifire type you usually see. I don't think they left the factory with one installed.
tourist
Late P-51D's (maybe D-25 and subsequent I should double check) had a rectangular rear view mirror mounted inside the top canopy frame. It can be seen inside the canopy in the Tamiya kit. As far as I know that's the only mirror installed at the factory, as the others mentioned many different styles of mirrors were mounted in the field, most of them are included in the big Tamiya kit. Douglas
Roger that, guys, and thank you. I never noticed there is a small rectangular rear view mirror just above the sight. And that Spitfire style external mirror, amazing. Regards, Douglas
