Poppop
I'm sure the answer has been posted before, but darn'ed if I can find it! What was the width of the yellow tips on the B-17G props? Big thanks to those who read and potentially respond to this! Charlie
WymanV
I think you're looking for the length. The width would be all the way across :woot.gif:/> IIRC, all US aircraft (that pertain) have 4" of yellow on the prop tips. Ken
DonSS3
I thought the standard was 6-inches? I'm away from references at the moment, but I'm pretty sure.
Joe Hegedus
I thought 6" also. The 4" was the width of each of the red/yellow/blue stripes on blades prior to the use of just yellow, IIRC.
Jennings
Six inches.
seawinder
Six inches. RAF 4 inches, perhaps? Looks right, anyway.

That may be what I was thinking of. I build an awful lot of them. Ken
WymanV
Wait. The tri-color prop tips on pre-war US aircraft are 2" stripes. A current discussion on hyperscale confirms they were indeed 4" yellow tips. Ken
bigjugs
All USAAF aircraft had yellow prop tips that were four (4) inches in width. T.O. 07-1-1 of 1943.
Jennings
Sorry, brain fart (the medical term is encephaloflatulence). Yes, 4" is correct. Edited December 6, 2013 by Jennings
jimmaas
Wait. The tri-color prop tips on pre-war US aircraft are 2" stripes. Ken Nope. The prewar USN red-yellow-blue prop stripes were four inches each. Except of course the blue on the rear face of the prop which could be extended an additional two feet on the rear face of the prop to reduce glare. However, the NAVY went to 6 inch yellow prop tips on Dec 1 1943 for props 15 feet or greater in diameter. I don't find an equivalent change for the AAF.
