Lancer512
What manufacturer? I would go for Tamiya.
gonzalo
How old is your sisters kid? Niece or Nephew?
Dave Williams
The new tool Tamiya F-16 kits are pretty pricy. I'd recommend one of the Hasegawa kits, provided you get one at a sale price. Here are a few choices: http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/has07232.htm http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/has07308.htm http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/has09848.htm http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/has09962.htm Or are you considering the Revell Thunderbirds Air Team kit? http://modelkitsreview.com/revell-148-f-16-air-team/

If you're talking about the Revell Air Team F-16....it ain't half bad. I've got it and I think it would be perfect for a younger person just beginning. It can build up into something very nice. tobiK
Tamiya is pricy, and is no shake-and-bake kit! It is a higher engineered kit compared to others. The Revell kit is ok, and why not the italeri kit, both are not too challenging and also not too challenging for your wallet. Depends on how the niece/nephew considers a model kit...as a toy that you have to glue together first? Or as a model kit to build with patience and only to look at later? Dave Williams
Think the new Italeri kits are reboxes of the Kinetic kit, and not really cheap. Italeri did their own 1/48 F-16s years ago, but I don't think they are still available.
tobiK
Yes, the own Italeri Vipers! Not the Kinetik reboxes - those are too difficult for beginners. OFC you can get the "old" F-16 ... only the double seater is out. http://www.italeri.com/scheda.asp?idProdotto=1892&idCategoria=1&idSottocategoria=2 http://www.italeri.com/scheda.asp?idProdotto=497&idCategoria=1&idSottocategoria=

Should be an easy fun build
Lancer512
I first wanted to recommend the old Italeri kits, but Catfan wrote "new released", so as I understood it, this only leaves the Tamiya and Italeri/Kinetic kits, which are on both the high end. The Hasegawa kits are less expensive, but I was surprised they are still so high.
tobiK
Hasegawa you can only get for cheap prices second hand...from private. The Italeri has not too much fiddly parts, in the end looks quite well like a Viper, even not accurate in the last tiny detail. Even Revell reboxed it for their belgian "Tiger" years ago. I build an Italeri Viper too, it s a testbed for modelling technics, scratch building, kit bashing...without having the risk to scew up an expensive high-end kit! And in the end there will be a nice F-16 (hopefully...it s not finished yet). It s also a good source for nice decals to put on a Hasegawa / Kinetic...the complete kit costs only a few bucks than an AM decals sheet! And - hey presto! - you have a new test plastic, or something to build with your kid together, as a start up.
Dave Williams
Hasegawa you can only get for cheap prices second hand...from private. What do you consider cheap? The links I posted show four Hasegawa f-16 kits for $30 or less at Sprue Brothers. The Italeri and Tamiya kits cost more at the same source.
habu2
As others have mentioned, the most "recently released" 1/48 F-16 is the re-issue of the Revell F-16C in Thunderbirds markings. The OP needs to clarify what kit he is considering. As for the Italeri boxings there have been seven that I know of, five have the original Italeri molds, two are reboxed Kinetic molds. Italeri molds, kit #s 840, 841, 848, 2654, 2694 Kinetic molds in Italeri boxes, kit #s 2683, 2686

tobiK
Cheap is: 10 - 20 € (13 - 27 USD), consider that you can get Kinetik (original and Italeri reboxed) for 20 - 25€ already (27 - 34 USD) - better detailed, more parts for diff. options, more "bling-bling" to hang under the wings. Tamiya from 34 -40 USD up. @habu2: you are right! I just mentioned the 2 Italeri kits that are actually available (soure: www.italeri.com). Other kits you may find in evil-bay or second hand. Dave Williams
The Kinetic/Italeri prices may only be $27-34 in Europe, but they are more expensive in the US, like $40 - $50. Note, I wasn't saying you couldn't get cheap Hasegawa kits on eBay. I was questioning the comment that you can "only" get cheap Hasegawa kits on eBay. It would be helpful if the OP would come back to this thread and tell us what kit he was talking about, and provide more detail on what skill and detail level he's looking for, instead of us all just guessing. I love ARC for this, the OP asks a very vague question, a barrage of answers come in guessing what he has in mind, and no one really has a clue. Catfan should know where to but cheap kits, I see him often at Kit Collectors show, and some contests, that's where your going to find your $10 Hasegawa F-16's. Johnopfor
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Academy F-16 kit yet.
Jinxter13
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Academy F-16 kit yet. The [Academy] kit can be turned into a stunner......with help...a lot of help , the ordnance included is not what your normal everyday Viper..goes packin', and the office is sparse at best. It does have the parts for either an "A" or early "C". As far as accuracy well..... . The newer release is the F-16C Block 25/32, which is the same boxing with the decal sheet changed. catfan
i guess i wasn't very awake when i wrote that but yes that is what i was wondering is how is that new revell f-16 Thunderbird kit and what block can it be built in to?
Dave Williams
i guess i wasn't very awake when i wrote that but yes that is what i was wondering is how is that new revell f-16 Thunderbird kit and what block can it be built in to? Judging from the sprues and instructions, it looks like maybe a Block 30. It has the GE exhaust, but the MLG doors don't appear to be bulged. http://manuals.hobbico.com/rmx/85-5326.pdf http://modelkitsreview.com/revell-148-f-16-air-team/ It seems to be a somewhat simplified kit, and the alternate decals are supposedly for F-16C 84-1316, which is actually a Block 25 with the P&W engine, according to the s/n. Think it's a repop of this old Revell 1989 kit. http://www.scalemates.com/products/product.php?id=163678 Also, I don't think the Thunderbirds flew GE engined aircraft. AFAIK, the C/D models they flew were P&W powered Blocks 32 and 52. It seems an cheap kit for a young person to get started on, but I wouldn't consider it particularly good or accurate as a serious kit.
