Kuat Systems Engineering, Patrol and Attack ship SLAVE I

Recommended Posts

Ah, a new year and as custom dictates I have to build a Star Wars kit!

This year´s project will be Boba Fett´s Slave I from Fine Molds in 1/72nd scale.

I´ve had the model in my stash for quite some time but I´ve never built up the courage to start it because of the

extensive chipping involved...but now I feel confident enough to get started :D

The box is quite sizable with nice boxart on the lid.

Well let´s get the lid off and have a peak at the goodies!

The bottom fuselage in two parts very nicely detailed and you can pick out a quite a few things that comes from the kitbash that was the original.

Fuselage halfs...no slide molding here :P

IMG_0778_zps71986d96.jpg

Followed by 7 sprues with parts, of wich one is a clear sprue.

And here´s the litle decals sheet and a white metal Han Solo, frozen in carbonite.

Oki then let´s get started!

I´ve put together small sub assemblies and impaled on toothpicksparts for priming per my usual custom.

The fuselage glued together and the bottom part with some details added.

A dry fit of the bottom fuselage.

Well then, this seems to go alright so far (knock on wood)

Cheers!

Oh yeah, this'll be good. I always enjoy your builds Janne, so I'll pull up a seat and tune in.

Am looking forward to see how you do your chipping. I have the same reason for also not buying this one as well, so I'm hoping to learn a few new tips from you on this one

Love what I see in those Fine Molds kits. I've personally never built one. I have built the old AMT Star Wars kits and had 2 sitting on the shelf for years (X-Wing & Tie Fighter). The thing I like about the AMT kits is the scale! Almost 1/32 I figure.

Wish the Fine Molds kits came in larger scales.

Love the Han Solo in carbonite accessory BTW!

!

Just building a fine molds kit are a delight in them selves, with that said yeah, larger scale stuff would been great, I'm a 1/48th scale guy myself. Luckily for me there are a few 1/48th scale kits out there: the TIE fighter, the X-wing and the snow speeder.

But the 1/72 stuff is amazing!

Got a wee bit of progress made today insite of hockey and children :P

Filled the middle seam with super glue...

IMG_0794_zpsb7957ed3.jpg

Sanded and primed in Alclad grey primer...

IMG_0795_zps2edff425.jpg

The small stuff got primed in Alclad grey and black....

IMG_0798_zps4793048b.jpg

And finally I pre shaded some selected parts with Tamyia XF-67 German Grey....

IMG_0799_zpsb2721b72.jpg

There, going to put down some lighter greys next time I get a chance :D

Cheers!

Update time :D

First off is the cockpit....my favourite part of a build :D

Here it´s painted with Tamyia XF-65 Field grey with few drops of white to brighten the day.

IMG_0800_zps56fb6942.jpg

Then some detail painting....and a clear coat on that.

IMG_0801_zpsdf8f91de.jpg

When the clear coat was dry I put on an oil wash and drybrushed with light grey.

IMG_0815_zps34823882.jpg

There, things start to get glued!

IMG_0816_zpsd2ab1dcc.jpg

But before the cockpit can be assembled, good ole boy Bubba needs some colors!

He doesn´t look like much with only the primer on...

IMG_0813_zps521432d7.jpg

Here he´s painted and clear coated, next a couple of small decals and then he´ll be washed in oils :P

IMG_0820_zps83b0b84a.jpg

On to soething else while the clear dries on Bubba...

A quick rerun on the vaseline chipping method...

Here´s the ....um well something :P Preshaded in XF-67 German grey, a little bit of vaseline a stomper made from a dish spunge.

IMG_0802_zps1b0ef4b6.jpg

I lightly stomper the surface, never pressing hard but just touching to get really smakk chips.

Here it is lightly stomped :D

IMG_0803_zps8998107c.jpg

Then I dusted on thinnly with FS 36495.....and had a cloth prepared.

IMG_0805_zps9ab1fff9.jpg

and then just gently rubbed the parts with the cloth so the vaseline came off....

IMG_0806_zpsf77df2bf.jpg

I´ve found that this method is really good for small chips :D

Well that´s it for today,

Cheers!

Nice job Janne. Love it. Somebody at work recently gave me a half finished Star Wars kit. Annakin's racer or something. Must get that out and finish it some time! Love the chips

Cheers

Ian
