I'm with you on that one, raises the hairs on my arms every time I see it. I can't believe how many people have never even heard of this movie.

Seems to me that I read that the mustang in that scene was an RC model. I don't care, still a powerful scene.

Also like the scene in Reach for the Sky when Douglas Bader takes over an unruly Canadian squadron who are not at all impressed by seeing their new legless CO, stump around. Then Bader hops into a nearby aircraft and puts on a real show.

Cheers

Nope, it was all filmed with real Mustangs. The pilot who waved at the young Christian Bale was the late Ray Hanna. There's an interesting article about the flying scenes in 'Empire of the Sun' here.

In "Porco Rosso" when Marco (aka Porco) recounts how his squadron was lost in WWI. Beautiful scene, beautifully animated.

The scene where Porco is trying to take off from the canal in Milan while being chased and shot at is also quite good.

cheers

Me too! Although I can't stand "Danger Zone" song anymore, the whole opening sequence is killer!

I remember talking to a USN pilot in the static park of an air show many years ago and he visibly cringed when that song came over the PA system.

I'm the first to mention the Cessna race against Notcher in Iron Eagle?

sad

I agree completely! That scene ALWAYS gets my vote for best flying scene. One could argue that P-51, F-14s, etc. are designed to do what you see in various movies, but I had no idea a Cessna could be so agile until I saw Iron Eagle.

Well I'm glad to get that cleared up. I'm never too old to learn something new. Thanks for the link, Vince.

Any of the aircraft POV shots during Top Gun, and "Which way did he go?!" "Which way did WHO go???" plus the classic "The United States NAVY regrets to inform you your sons are dead because they were STUPID."

Also the Bf-110 rear gunners view of the two Spitfires pulling Gs to get in behind for the kill shot during The Battle of Britain.

That Cessna was being flown by one of the greatest if not THE greatest stunt pilot to ever grab a yoke or control stick of any aircraft, of course I refer to the most revered Art Scholl, if you don't know of him you're living under a rock as far as aviation goes. Just in case you want to check out work he's done try this Art Scholl Movie List. He could do more stunts in his Super Chipmunk than, a monkey could on a flag pole. In IIRC, one of his more spectator hair raising moments he cut a ribbon at 4' with the tail of his Chipmunk flying inverted.

I like the scene in "Battle of Britain" when the "BF-109s" buzz the Spitfires on the ground and it looks like they clear the hedge by about 4ft. I may be stretching it here, but the opening scene of Star Trek The Motion Picture, where the Klingons are bearing down on VJER. They fly, right?

First off, Hi from the new guy!

Second, anyone remember in The War Lover when Steve McQueen's character beat up the airfield in a B-17? Amazing flying from a time when the flying was for real! If memory serves, I think it was Paul Mantz of Frank Tallman(??) that did the actual flying. Great stuff, and it really impressed THIS kid!

The 1927 movie Wings has a scene with massive number of biplanes in a giant furball. It also showed a bomber and escorts taking off viewed from above. Too bad directors haven't been that clever since.

It isn't strictly flying, but the parachute point-of-view scene from A Bridge Too Far is brilliant. It was actually taken from the earlier Arnhem movie Theirs is the Glory.

How about the opening scene from Always, with the PBY flying straight at the 2 fishermen?

And then there's The B-36 take off scene in Strategic Air Command where the camera plane is next to the B-36. I believe Paul Mantz was flying the B-25 camera ship.

I built that PBY from Always

Who also flew a Spitfire under a bridge for the BBC series "Piece of Cake".

One of the greats. I saw him fly a few times a long with his son Mark (also late, sadly)and it was always a privilege, especially if it was a Spitfire he was flying.
