F-16
I am ready to do some FLAT Acrylic white painting and I'm thinking of using one of the following as a base coat: Flat aluminum? Silver? Light gray? Which one would be best for covering over gray styrene? Is there any differences in base coverage? Thanks. Scott CNJC-IPMS
Netz
Tamiya Flat white will cover about anything, but any of the choices you listed should be fine. Curt
Spectre711
Like Curt said! If you are going to put a base then I would use a light gray over silver. This is just from my past experience with enamels lifting of with any tape while masking over silver.
Triarius
Flat silver or aluminum, basically any silver color. While Tamiya flat white has better hide than most, I still use a silver undercoat.
Mike C
Some people swear that silver undercoat will help bring out the brightness of white paint sprayed over it. But having tried it myself, I could not see that at all. Personally, I prefer spraying Gunze Aqueous H311 (FS36622) as undercoat before spraying white (either flat or gloss). The H311 is very light gray, pretty much off-white really. So, you won't need to lay down too many layers of white over it to get good outcome.
Just4kiks
Can't primer work as a white paint? I brush paint my models, so i don't really know.
Mike C
Yes it can actually. Tamiya fine surface primer in rattle can is excellent.
Just4kiks
Yes it can actually. Tamiya fine surface primer in rattle can is excellent. Primer does have a different bonding agent, too, right? Edited January 30, 2014 by Just4kiks
JesniF-16
+1 Tamiya Fine Surface Primer It's not necessary to put any other white paint over this stuff, plus it has VERY good coverage. I personally decant and airbush thinned with a bit of Mr. Leveling Thinner :thumbsup:/> /Jesse
F-16
Thanks for the advice and help. I do have a can of Tamiya White Primer, but can't use it outside here in NJ. Have to wait until spring to use it for the warmer weather. Tamiya spray primer does not like 20Deg. weather. Scott CNJC-IPMS
The Rat
Yes it can actually. Tamiya fine surface primer in rattle can is excellent. I'll second that. Excellent paint, either as primer or a final matte white.
gluefinger
Removing the gloss of the plastic will help coverage and color build up will happen faster. Scuff all surfaces with fine scotchbrite or water based abrasive cleaner, such as Ajax or Comet.
