seawinder
I'm currently working on just the second F-4 I've ever assembled and the first with slats -- Hasegawa 1/48 F-4E. I'd be interested to know how other builders have dealt with the fact that Hasegawa provides for the outer, but not the inner, slats to be deployed. I'm thinking it's unlikely a plane would be seen on the ground in this configuration, so I should probably modify the outer slats to retracted position. I have no wish to do the surgery to deploy the inner slats. Thoughts? Thanks, Pip
phasephantomphixer
The only time inner slats were deployed when parked was when they were opened for inspection, etc. Rarely. I advise you press on and enjoy your build! Edited February 7, 2014 by phasephantomphixer
chek
The outer wing slats on the F-4 don't actually move forward or back, instead they tip forward on hinges. With the inner slats retracted, the outer ones sit more or less parallel to the wing panel and slightly above. When deployed the outer slats tip nose down, as the upper figure in the diagram below shows.
Tailspin Turtle
That's an illustration lifted from my blog post on F-4S slats, http://tailspintopics.blogspot.com/2012/12/f-4s-wing.html. For that post, I modified the original to delete the F-4E slats, which were slightly different in airfoil shape (the Navy needed better low speed capability).
seawinder
Many thanks, everybody. Looks as if the Hasegawa parts can be installed without modification to be retracted. Cheers, Pip
