Wild Bill Horton
I just built Tamiya's wonderful Stormovik. I'm not an expert on the plane, and had a few detail questions I was wondering if someone could answer: 1) Just inboard of the cannon barrels are two very thin tubes that almost look like machine gun barrels, but I don't think they are. Can someone tell me what they're for? 2) On the left wing, there's a small triangular indicator which has some numbers painted next to it; I'm guessing this is a very rudimentary gas gauge; am I warm? 3) In the center of the prop spinner, there's a metal fitting. I'm not sure if its a cannon barrel, or a fastener. I know someone knows the answers to all of the above; I'm posting this at 8 AM and am guessing I'll have the answers by 11. Everythings like sports betting these days, you have to have a point spread! Thanks for your help. By the way, photos are in The Display Case forum, and the kit does live up to the hype. G.R.Morrison
I am certainly no Sturmovik wizard, but have you investigated this link? Il- pages 1) the 'tubes' that look like machine guns are, indeed, ShKAS guns. 3) the metal fitting on the spinner is for an external starter, usually mounted on a truck, called a Hucks starter, common on many nations' warplanes. Flankerman
You can see them on this photo I took of Monino's Il-2..... Here it is inside the museum on another occasion...... The fitting on the prop is called (IIRC?) a dog clutch - used as an external starter using a Hucks Starter, as GRM says. You can see it in use here. Ken
PFlint
the triangle with numbers sounds like a fuel information stencil. (often seen post-war) it's location does not make any sense as all the fuel is in the fuselage.
Flankerman
There is a rod that protudes above the wing in the area of the undercarriage. It shows when the u/c is extended - you can just make it out in my photos. It isn't a triangle with numbers though....AFAIK. Thinks..... it isn't a flap indicator is it?? - with the numbers showing degrees of extension. Just a thought..... maybe not visible if the flaps are retracted. Ken when I first read his post I thought he meant the numbers were inside the triangle... reading again I see there is a different way to interpret that. so , Yes Ken I think you are right it's the landing flap angle indicator. :)
