Hotdog
SRB's look great! Let me know if you have any trouble getting those decals to fit. I did my best to scale them accurately, using my kit as a reference, but I have not tried them out. So you are kind of my beta tester, especially with those tile decals (they are NEW). cbear
Don't want to derail this thread, Hotdog, but will you be producing that sheet or others for sale?
Jay Chladek
Incredible work on both the ET and the SRBs (not to mention the orbiter itself). That's the thing about launch stacks, they are four models stuck together and each one requires its own approach to building and painting properly. BTW, the yellow covers on top of the SRBs are temporary covers to allow access to the igniters for each motor. When the igniters have their arming pins pulled on the day before launch, the yellow covers are replaced with white flight articles.
egt95
Thanks, Jay for your kind words. I chose to use the yellow access panels because I want the stack to have the "roll out" look on it's way to the launch pad. Which is the reason for the engine covers and RSC plugs. And yes, the stack is like putting four seperate models together to make one. And with that, we have put the final touches on the orbiter, started spraying the clear coat on the boosters, while the finished external tank awaits the mating. Today I gave the SRB main segments their semi-gloss clear coat to protect the finised product with the decals. I also put the final decals on the orbiter that were provided by Hotdog. The first photo shows the temporary window decals. Followed by removing them with the Revell decal on the top RCS thrusters. I then used the windows and thruster decals provided by Hotdog for the final look.... And together, they equal... A better fit, plus the white that shows through the tiles is virtually gone. Once the package has been completed, I'll shoot photos all the way around. But for now, you can see the red RCS thruster plugs on the nose. So while I wait for the clear coat on the SRB's to completely set, here are all of the parts next to each other. All I have left to do is dull coat the Frustums and the aft skirts on the SRB's and coat the orbiter with it's final protective layer. :salute:/>
Hotdog
Looking fantastic! You've got me wanting to build an STS-1 stack now. Let's see those SSME's with the Rockwell covers! Don't want to derail this thread, Hotdog, but will you be producing that sheet or others for sale? Yes, when I finish making decals for all of the tile areas, I will have sheets available for sale. There will be two versions to choose from, an early version and a later version of tiles. Thermal blankets will also be included (cover your orbiter in decals!). A separate sheet with all of the markings for the SRB's and all of the orbiters will be optional but also available.
crowe-t
WOW, Mike, beautiful job! The Shuttle, ET and SRB's all look outstanding. Mike.
egt95
Thanks guys!!! I just dull coated the Frustums and Aft Skirts along with the orbiter. I'll start working on some epic photos of the finished product. Mike
spaceman
Hi Mike, your stack looks really awesome, I can not wait to see him standing on the MLP. What are the next steps, the FSS tower?
egt95
Wait no longer... I don't think I'm going to start on the launch complex for a little while for I want to get a couple of other projects out of the way. My little boy is still waiting for me to complete the Airbus A300 and I need to get back to the beany caps for you guys. With some of the 1/72 shuttle build threads going on, it's inspiring me to finish the one I've got going. In which I will make a thread too. But for now, here is the finished product of Space Shuttle Columbia. Representing her maiden flight and the first test mission, STS-1.
egt95
Thanks everyone for all of your good advice and techniques. All of your knowledge, trial and errors, aftermarket parts and encouragement helped me in finishing a near perfect project. Hail Columbia! (OV-102). Mike
Hotdog
Excellent work! It turned out great! Thank you for sharing with us. Looking forward to the next shuttle (and beanie caps).
crowe-t
Hail Columbia, Indeed!!! :) Mike, you did a beautiful job on this stack! It's a wonderful tribute to Columbia. Very well done and thanks for sharing this with us. Mike. Edited July 23, 2014 by crowe-t
spaceman
Hi Mike, you have built an awesome STS-1 stack with a lot of nice details like the real one, very impressive work! Didn't you want to build a launch tower for this stack, or I've just imagined it?
egt95
Hi Mike, you have built an awesome STS-1 stack with a lot of nice details like the real one, very impressive work! :coolio:/> Didn't you want to build a launch tower for this stack, or I've just imagined it? :rolleyes:/> :wave:/> Thank you. I didn't have any plans on building a launch tower for this project. The tower reissue that I purchased comes with it's own stack and as I found out the hard way (like usuall) Revell and Airfix, although the same scale, are not the same size. The Airfix seems to be a bit bigger, and as you know with the mobile launch platform, the Revell launch complex is slightly undersized from what is supposed to be a 1/144 scale. Anyhow, I think my plan is to build Discovery, STS-41D, with the launch tower. Another maiden voyage.
spaceman
Mike, then you can let your time, wait and see. Yep, the maiden flight of Discovery STS-41D is also a very good choice for a project with the old Launch Tower. Since I'm curious how you want to solve the scale problem of this Revell kit, because the MLP is the sticking point and with only 1:200 much too small. Can't wait to see your start. niart17
GREAT JOB! This came out beautiful. It really captures the look of STS-1 and would stand out in a line up of shuttle builds. Very impressed with what you've accomplished. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Bill

K2Pete
I hafta agree with everybody ... very, very nice work on this little 144 kit! Your attention to the details ( like the dots on the bottom of the ET ) is inspirational! And Mr H. Dog ... those decals are gorgeous ... where does the line form? Thanx for the terrific build Mike! It was great fun watching it all come together! Pete
egt95
Thanks everyone for the compliments. There's definately more to come. I think I may get back to the 1/72 model, so stay tuned for that thread.
crowe-t
Mike, I hope you start a thread here of your 1/72 shuttle build soon. From what I've seen, you've done some amazing work so far. Mike.
Hotdog
I agree with crowe-t. Looking forward to seeing more of your superior tile work! And if you need any 1/72 shuttle decals from me, let me know and I will try to accomodate.
jetplane
Wow, Very nicely built 1/144 Shuttle of early Columbia.....good to see more Shuttle completed models. Cheers, Jetplane Thanks everyone for all of your good advice and techniques. egt95
Rekindling the memories in this build. It's hard to believe that it's been 4 years since I started this one.  Enjoy.
