Sebastian Haff
Hi, all. In previous attempts at replicating wood I have started with a light tan base, and then used thinned burnt umber oil and, a broad brush to replicate the grain. This worked well for a small areas like a prop, or 1/35 guns/tools, but not so well for a larger area like the Fokker interior I'm doing. I'm interested in hearing what you guys do. Thanks, and happy modeling!
The Loggie
Well, Sebastian, I build in 72-scale, and to replicate wood, I put-down an undercoat of gloss white. Then I take a brush with stiff, short (@ 7mm), coarse bristles, dip the tips in Citadel Miniatures Snakebite Leather (brown) paint (I dunno it's new name), then drag it over the white. This gives me a woodgrain finish. Knots I replicate with a dot of white glue / Krystal Kleer. The bristles move around it, and I remove it later (and replace with a dot of a darker brown). For darker wood, I drag-on a second coat of brown. In a larger scale/s, I suppose other colours could be used. I thought that I'd already answered this thread. Good luck with your wood-work. George, out.............
Arseny
Sebastian, here're some really good articles on replicating wood grain. And apart from the oils you can also use decals and photoetched stencils to replicate the grain. Hope it helps
Arseny
And another article with photos about the decals for interiors here
Aaronw
I use oils over a brown base coat of acrylic paint. One really helpful bit was getting one of those fan brushes (it is flat and splayed out like an old bamboo and paper fan).
