Spectre711
Since I was just going to build this I might as well do it here. Academy P-51B in 72 scale with Eagle Strike decals of Geronimo from the 362 FS, 357 FG. It's the one at the bottom of the decal sheet.
Spectre711
And I did a little painting last night.

Spectre711
Can anybody tell me if the metal tanks were primarily used or the paper ones around D-Day? Also what colors would they be? The Academy instructions are saying to paint them Neutral Grey for both types on US mustangs.
AX 365
While I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, it's you model so do what appeals to you. I'd bet you could do whatever you wished and it would look correct. If it were me, I'd probably opt for metal tanks. You'll have the paint for the aircraft in the brush so you might as well spray the tanks too. Progress looks good so far. Mike
Spectre711
I was siding tward the metal tanks since it was easier to prep them for paint than the paper tanks and they are already done.
Spectre711
I only was able to stuff the openings over the weekend. Today I was motivated after work and shot some MM olive and Chrome with a touch of white mixed in.
falcon20driver
Looking good , almost time for that shiny finish.
Spectre711
Not much to say other than I got a clear on and this weekend will be spraying some aluminum.
Spectre711
I did some taping this morning and will hopefully start the aluminum soon.
Spectre711
Not bad!
falcon20driver
I like it! I've always thought about doing that type of scheme, and now seeing it on an actual model really has my interest peaked.
Spectre711
Thought I would hand paint the stripes with Poly Scale but that didn't work out too well. Poly S was good stuff and I can't figure out why someone would change the formula and then drop the paint line. This was a pretty new jar also. Going to have to carefully sand it down and then spray it with Tamiya white. Edited April 10, 2014 by Spectre711
falcon20driver
Man that's gotta be frustrating. I know you'll get it all cleaned up and looking great!
CorsairMan
I've never seen that before. Sorry it happened! Sand and reshoot is a good approach. I'm hoping you can do it in a way that will preserve the rest of your work!
Spectre711
At least I only had time for the wings. I'm going to sand as much of it off and then I'm going to mask and shoot with Tamiya white. I was going for a more original hand painted look so I figured the Poly Scale would be the best but it wasn't. I think I got a bad batch cause I sprayed this a couple of months ago on a Phantom and had similar problems. I thought I had thinned it too much but seeing the same results straight from the jar I know it can't be me.
AX 365
That really blows! Good luck on the recovery.
Spectre711
So here is my fix. It's okay but wish it was better.
falcon20driver
Looks good to me. I really like that paint scheme.
Spectre711
Should the tops of the horizontal stabilizers been white and the underside been black on the bare metal surface?
falcon20driver
I believe that the tops were white, but I'm not sure about the bottom.
Spectre711
I've been not so busy here but this is the progression so far. Invasion stripes got a bit wonky here.
falcon20driver
Spectre, I love the way this Mustang is looking. This scheme is going on my build list for sure!
