HAF Aegean blue F-4

Recommended Posts

I have a question about the HAF Aegean blue scheme for the F-4e's. Searches have not produced the answer, so bear with me on this one. Anyway, I would like to do a number of Greek aircraft, F-4, F-5, F-16's in various HAF paint, (I love the weathering possibilities). The F-4E with the Aegean blue seems doable, but I don't know what to use for the silver underside. The FS number is basically chrome silver, which I believe is too bright, almost like bare metal, which won't work on the F-4s. So first, what silver to use, second, I can't find a drawing or good photo which shows the demarcation line. I'm sure on the actual aircraft it varies, but I have no starting point. Also, some of my research may indicate the aircraft where painted overall blue, so which is it? I am going to try an experiment on the weathering, while it may have been done, I just thought of it. I plan on using a white primer sprayed downward on the horizontal surfaces and a gray primer on the vertical surfaces. Hopefully with some overspray/blending my thought is that it will produce the fading effect of the sun.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Morso,

For your first question, the FS number is 17178 which is Silver or Chrome Silver, but your right in saying that it looks too bright. Due to heavy weathering, the colour dulls and darkens quite a bit so I think something like a flat aluminum would work (maybe Tamiya XF-16 with a drop of grey), and then weathering this with some smoke as well. Check this site for references to FS colours. LINK

As for the demacation line, it seems to follow the wing root in the back half of the fuselage and then the bottom of the intake for the forward fuselage. Her are some links to sites that may help, Link 1, Link 2

The blue is one colour (FS 35164), but you get many variations of it across the aircraft due to the heavy weathering, so I'd simulate the weathering with lighter versions of the FS colour and some pre shading. You can check out some of the Greek modelling sites like helmo.gr to see some nice builds of Aegean Blue Phantoms. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, very helpful, links as well. As far as the weathering, I figured I would pre-shade the panel lines and lighten the base color a bit on the horizontal surfaces, I guess I thought this primer thing might add to the effect. Might not be worth the effort though, but thanks for the info.

For underside silver-grey try a mix of airframe aluminium with some light grey.Varnish, washes and even a filter will tone down enough for a good scale effect.

I think the best way to paint and weather the "Aegean Blue" is to lighten a little the basic color and spray all over.

Then lighten more and overspray all "upper" surfaces and add some free hand panelling on the wings including this

Then with varius tones of the basic 35164 add soft and hard patches all over.Patafix will help you to mask some interesting patches.

Some earth filters or dusting especially on wings will add the final touch of the painting.

Finally you can add streaks and washes

Keep in mind that Phantom serials starting with 015** must have DIAS antennas after 1990.(here from AUP)

The nose one, must be under the cone,in front of gun muzzle.(Later on AUPs repositioned under gun as the photos below)

Other serials starting with 71***(5 digits) have TISEO on left wing and no DIAS.

morso484, the F-4E with the Aegean blue camo is my favourite "paint" for the HAF aircraft. I build one a couple of years ago and since I am a "lover" of weathering I can tell you how I reached the following "results"...

Sooo...for the Silver I used the Gunze one but I applied a mat varnish and a lot of weathering with pastels and oils. The Top surfaces is a different story, the main colours I used were the two "blues" H42 and H56, but then I started mixing those colours with H311...H337...H338 to get the weathering variations of the "main" colour. Of course pre-shading and post-shading is a must. Then oils and pastels gave the "end result".

Nice choice of aircraft and scheme.

You could always build the unique 71759, which was the only AUP modded F-4E that wore the Aegean Blue scheme.

If not here is two photos showing clearly the demarcation of the Blue and the Silver

Scott,

in reality many AUPs stayed with Aegean blue for a short time...

Many went to Germany with this scheme, and most major upgrades are inside...

Only the nose cone,IFF blades and relocation of DIAS cover from cone to under the gun fairing, are the main defferences...

So after final upgrades, they went to paint shop...In this time they're most Aegean Blue!

Cheers,

George.

After reviewing the links and photos provided, I want to thank everyone again. The info provided was exactly what I was looking for and answered my questions, also Zark, again that is one fine aircraft, I hope mine can be half as good.

They are scratchbuilt using semicircular Cross sections of plastic rods. I trimmed the back of it and at the front I just keep adding white glue and when dried I gave it the shape I wanted.

Good idea "modeling" wise, bad idea "Money" wise. Hase is offering them with some NAVY exmples but the rest of the parts are not the correct ones for an F-4E.

There wasn't one when I built my AUP and I've never seen one advertised since, but the IFF antennas are available in several Hasegawa F-16 boxings although they're a slightly different shape but easily corrected. Failing that you can make them yourself. In the cockpit I used photo etch for the F-18F for the MFD's
