Hi Aussie-Pete, yeah, hopefully, someday. I also thought about scaling it down to 1/32 instead of 1/18 (which is huge at 15.5 inches long). Although scaling down would require modifying the thickness of many of the parts. On 8/29/2018 at 4:35 PM, johnlove_mk_II said: This is, as they say, the complicated bit. Hi John, yeah it's taking me a while examining the photos to see how the tubes connect to each other. There are some differences between the LLRV and LLTV so I'm trying to make sure I get them right. The frame is actually a lot less complicated compared to the exposed engine's parts/tubes and the piping around it that I'm still scratching my head over on how to execute. Just look at all that piping -- wow! It puts the Millennium Falcon to shame: I even picked up a CF-200 engine maintenance manual that I hoped would give me the courage to boldly proceed in detailing the engine further. It's done exactly the opposite so far. So I guess when mine gets done it will end up looking more like a bare-bones model. Hi, Manfred, thanks for stopping by!
crackerjazz
I was hoping I'd finish one section a month -- was hoping for a detailed engine and working gimbal for February but the month just zoomed past. This inner ring was modified to a simple ring on the LLTV but was still squarish like this on the original LLRVs. To make the flanges around the lightening holes I used to glue small rings. One day I made a mistake of using the next bigger hole on the punch and saw the flanges just formed nicely. Just noticed that the flanges on the bottom holes of the outer structure should turn inward. I did the top ones right at least. For the bottom ones I'll probably just leave them the way they are for now or maybe sand them down later. Right now I'm more worried about the strength of this outer structure because the whole frame connects to it.
K2Pete
CJ, the way you solve problems, like a square-ish ring, amazes me. And don't worry about the flanges, when this is done, even if you display what you've got now, the viewer will be so blown away that we won't even take notice of 'em. Keep up the superb work ....... but you better hurry up! Pete
spaceman
Hey Joe, great to see you back in scratch-building your bizarre LLRV, and again in the same impressive way as before, keep it up.
crackerjazz
Thanks Manfred! Hey thanks Pete I'm doing my best : ) Hopefully I can come up with a fully assembled model in September and not a crash scene dio with parts strewn about : ) Some more work on the gimbal. Making those pivots. They're a little different in design. The forward one (on the left) connects to actuators that swing the engine on its axis. I was initially planning on cutting out rectangular openings on the fairing but chickened out as the vacuformed part is quite flimsy. Took the easier way out and cut away the portion that will be hidden. Now I know why this inner ring was modified to a plain circular one without bolts on the LLTV. It's to make the modeler's life easier. For some obscure reason the lightening holes are irregularly spaced and assymetrical. Next up will cut up some brass rods for the shafts and the engine should start swingin' ! : )
niart17
This is amazing! I don't know that I'd have the guts to take on such a complicated machine. Your scratch building skills are crazy good. BTW, doesn't this build qualify for the Moon Landing 50th GB? It certainly would be welcomed I'm sure. Bill
crackerjazz
Thanks, Bill! Yeah, it's gonna be my entry in fact -- have to start a build thread in the GB. It will give me the push I need to finish it, hopefully. Strangely, 2019 was my original target but back in 2014 it seemed so far away. Now it feels just like cramming for an exam at the last minute. Wombat
Outstanding work crackerjazz! I use to follow a persons space related works on another board many years ago that were so much like yours in the way of ability and creating pretty much everything by hand. It really is impressive seeing all the detail you guys are able to do dare I say it, the old fashion way. It's absolutely fantastic to see it being done with such incredible results! This will certainly qualify for the GB ... and 5 years, young fella, has an interesting way of zipping by. But if you're gonna finish this gorgeous piece, your 2 or 3 ... or 5 or 6 ... OTHER builds will have to wait. Maybe see you at HeritageCon in 3 weeks? Pete
crackerjazz
Wombat thanks! Appreciate your kind comments. Hi Pete, for sure! Want to see your new stuff! A little update on the gimbal. I managed to install some brass rods to see if the gimbal works. The thing looks huge in the close-up pics but it's not really that big. That outer ring is about 4 inches across. crackerjazz
Jumping around doing assorted parts....Made the oil tank for the engine. I'm supposed to focus on detailing the engine for the whole month of March. But looking at the photos I got overwhelmed and had to turn my attention to something else. I thought I might as well detail the rear tray.
K2Pete
Yowser ... man ... CJ, your scratch building is a sight to behold ... and your mini-lathe work, in-desc-ribable! ... but wait, whoa ... isn't this supposed to be in the GB??? Pete
my favs are F`s
Amazing! Beautiful! Inspiring!
spaceman
Thanks Joe for your lesson in scratch building. Your idea for using the Dremel as mini-lathe is awesome, I will keep it in mind.
Wombat
That is some stellar work! Absolutely love how you are going about creating this subject. Scratch building at it's finest!
crackerjazz
Hi Wombat, Spaceman, MFAF, thanks, guys! : )
Wombat
Seeing all those sub assemblies come together must bring a bit of satisfaction for all the hard work? That does look insanely good from where I'm sitting! That detail is just amazing that you've been able to replicate not to mention the way you are doing it all. Outstanding work! spaceman
Hey Joe, what an incredible detailed scratch work, looks like you are still employing a few employees in your work shop. Be honest, how many are? I take my hat off in awe to your skill, keep it up, it's a pleasure to see your progress.
Go Flight
Outstanding work Crackerjazz!! Long time member here, but was a lurker and then lost track of the forum. That is until I started building the 3 Stooges LLRV, and when I finished all the pieces, it still looked incredibly empty. I re-found Tag Team's offer and sent for their CD, and then I found you on this site. Gotta say amazing work. Even tho my little dinky 1/72 version is nothing by comparison, I'm following your build with interest, adding what I can to my little model.
crackerjazz
Hi Wombat, , appreciate the kind words : ) Hi Go Flight, thanks! Would love to see pics of your model. Hey, that's a good CD of Jay Chladek's photos of the LLTV B3 (NASA 952) at the JSC. It was the 5th and final training vehicle made -- so wonderfully preserved. Hi Manfred, I took an entire week off to spend March break with my kid but ended up building so you saw a lot of progress. Now things might slow down again, but I'll try my best and see how far I can take this. Hopefully completed by GB's end : )

It wasn't until I added all the kit parts and the model still looked sparse that I realized it was necessary to do some scratch building. At the time I was just trying to copy the few clear parts by eyeballing the size etc. So far I have the two additional spherical tanks in the rear, the attitude adjustemtn nozzles, and I'm currently trying to create a tiny altimeter unit for the rear. I figure if I could busy it up with some wiring and plumbing it would make the tiny scale a bit more believable. I painted it gloss black in prep of the metallic coat before I thought I needed to add "more stuff." 😉 Thanks for looking.
crackerjazz
Looking great with the additions, already, Kev! I hear you.. it's a "guts-outside" craft so it's a little harder to replicate but as long as we add a few details here and there it shouldn't look so bare.
crackerjazz
Sorry I haven't updated this for so long. Finally figured out how they connected together those pipes at the top that form the square frame. Blew up some photos on how they connected the legs to the gimbal frame as well and got those done. K2Pete
I think I remember you-u-u ... and this LLRV thing looks familiar ... Oh-h-h-h ...now I remember ... .... nice to see you back on this CJ ... I hafta say, your 3D rendering is gor-r-geous! I hope you complete this before, you know, the end of the world ... in 10 years! Pete
spaceman
Hey Joe, I've already missed you too with your grasshopper (sorry), so I'm all the more pleased that you are going to continue. Excellent work as before, keep it up!
