Sgt Shultz II
I've been reading up on bomb markings and found that after 1967 navy bombs were coated with a rough finish fire retardent. The pictures shows how rough the finish can be. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0a/Mark82Bomb.JPEG & http://previewcf.turbosquid.com/Preview/Content_2009_07_14__07_11_00/mk82usn_01.jpgcaa44e58-66cc-40f9-a613-f3ff04878845Larger.jpg Now the $64 dollar question is does someone make them in 1/32 scale??? graves_09
Short answers is yes, but it depends on which type of bomb your looking for. Wolfpack made some thermally protected gbu-38s in 1/32. I'm sure there are others. More often folks will use different techniques to add the coating. I've used mr surfacer 500 and stippled it with an old paint brush. Others can chime in with their preferred method. Edited April 30, 2014 by graves_09
Rex
"after 1967" is certainly true,,,,,,,,but, the earliest we have found photos of is the 1970 cruises, and some of those cruises didn't have the ablative coated bombs yet. You can plainly see that they are still the slicker painted bombs, with only one stripe. Another detail is that only the bomb body has the ablative coating on it, all the add-ons are still smooth finished, tail fin kits, fuzes, laser kits, GPS kits, etc
Finn
Shore based bombs continued to be non-thermally protected: http://media.nara.gov/stillpix/330-cfd/1983/DN-ST-83-08102.jpeg caption for the photo indicates 4/15/1983. Jari
Finn
Never noticed this before but on the coating near the tail end it was ground down, most likely so the Mk-15 Snakeye tail kit could fit. Here are some examples: Mk-82: http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/060718-N-5917H-010.jpg http://uscarrierhistory.com/index_files/image71902.jpg GBU-12: http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/080530-N-7981E-259.jpg http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/040628-N-1045B-028.jpg GBU-38: http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/041123-N-4308O-075.jpg http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/110812-N-DX615-158.jpg Note on the GBU-38/54 that there is one fixed fin, upper left (looking fwd) the rest are movable for guiding the bomb.
