11bee
What is the best way to do this finish? I've always used Testors Aluminum, thought it came out ok. Don't go for any of the "shiny" buffing metallic colors because the coating used seemed to be more on the flat side vrs glossy.
F4DPhantomII
Thanks
Jennings
Almost any non buffing aluminum colored finish will work. As long as it's not shiny...
F4DPhantomII
I have the Model Master Aluminum and Model Master Non Buffing Metallizer. Which to use?
Jennings
The metallizer stuff is probably finer grained, so would look more to scale. The real thing is ground aluminum powder mixed into a clear carrier, so figure the scale size of those itty bitty flakes of aluminum. The biggest problem with most aluminum model 'paints' (as opposed to the metallizer type finishes) is that the aluminum flakes are huge, so you can actually see a 'grain' to it. Some brands are better than others, but most of the non-buffing metallizer type finishes have a much more finely ground powder in them. zark
About ten years ago I build the Monogram kit and I faced the same problem. I finally used modelmaster aluminum and after a long period of curring - a week - I sprayed a humbrol mat coat...check my photos to see the end result!
Paul Boyer
Testor Metalizer non-buffing Aluminum has been my choice for "painted" aluminum for decades: Overcoated with a clear gloss or semi-gloss. Edited May 15, 2014 by Paul Boyer
RichardL
Alclad II Semi-Matte Aluminum (very fine pigment).
