aircav
Hi All I'm planning on building a Chilean HU-53 by cross kitting a couple of the 1/35 Dragon Hughes/MD 500's kits but I need a little help first. Can anyone tell me what the antenna is that I've circled in red is for please and do you know how long it is. Many thanks Steve Edited June 11, 2014 by aircav

FM-Whip
I believe those are long-range HF antennas. From looking at photos, it doesn't appear to be standardized. I see different lengths, with slightly different mountings. One side-view diagram shows an antenna rod length (not including the mounting) that is almost exactly the same as the horizontal distance between the tip of the nose of an HU-53 and the leading edge of the rear door, assuming the reference line is perfectly horizontal. huey_crew_chief
I have seen them on a lot of Latin American UH-1s, mounted on top of the cabin. I want to say they are also used on boats. Some type of long range HF antenna. I would like to know more as well. Edited June 12, 2014 by huey_crew_chief
HeavyArty
I want to say they are also used on boats. I think it may be a for LORAN-C, or a similar direction finding/nav system. Edited June 12, 2014 by HeavyArty
Winnie
It is indeed an HF radio antenna, the length is variable as you adjust the length of the antenna for different frequencies. Cheers H.
