Storch DAK squiggles scheme

Recommended Posts

I was tempted to put this in the Helicopters forum... LOL

I am almost to painting time for my Tamiya 100th 48th kit Storch. (As soon as I get myself over the illogical terror of its canopy masking...AAAAIIIEEEE :(/>/> !!!) I am building Rommel's SF RL and wondering if there are any cheats or tools to better imitate the squiggle paintjob on there. I've seen some squiggle decals (for other scales and other kits of other aircraft) but I suspect I'd need several sheets and/or they'd be just totally incorrect.

I need to just buck up and freehand airbrush it, don't I? Therapy... I'll need therapy....

NOTE : I tried to post some photos I purchased of SFRL with Rommel from Ebay, failed, then tried to post a couple I found GIS, failed, and then ran out of energy to try more. "Storch SF-RL" brought up several b/w images, some color pics of a restored storch in that scheme, and several of completed models. Warning : though also some soft-porn (boobie) images that I shudder to imagine how that gets brought up.

TIA!

I think you'll surprise yourself if you try it freehand - it's simpler than you might think. The key is practising on a bit of scrap plastic first - maybe try taking an old ice cream tub and spraying it up like your kit, and have a practise. The only recommendation I can make is to maybe try a slightly thicker than normal paint mix (well, less thinned) and a higher flow rate, so each of the squiggles only requires one pass. You'll never make them look right if you have to go over them again. But practise, practise, practise first!

Great kit, loved building mine.
