mam-07grublo
Hi Guys this is my latest work in Progress, Bandai's old 1/72 VF-1A Super Valkyrie from the 80's. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr You'll be thinking 'What? Bandai makes planes?? I thought they only did robots?' Well, apparently they did and technically the valkyrie can be considered a mecha so... Anyways although Hasegawa and Bandai themselves have newer and much superior kits of the Valkyrie, I'd thought I would try building their old kit out of curiosity and also to see what fun I could have out of building it. It's cheaper too by a thousand yen or so, haha. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr The kit comes in brown and greenish grey plastic, quite a bit for a thousand yen kit. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr Being a kit of the 80's it's quite chunky with some details being out of shape particularly the nose. However I will be keeping the shape of the design as I plan to show off the 80's design and build of the kit. It would be pretty cool to also show a comparison with the modern Hasegawa kit and show how far has the design progressed, a comparison from the 80's and now. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr However the kit is much too plain to be shown like that so that calls for some detailing up, first is to give it the trademark valkyrie stub nose. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr The pilots were the real reason why the UN Spacy won the war. Not included are his squadronmates; Brick Hardfist and Thrust McThickneck More updates coming soon! spejic
This is one of the first kits I ever built, and I still have an untouched one in the stash. It's a fun build and the finished Valkyrie has excellent posability. And you can't get a Hasegawa Valkyrie into Gerwalk mode without a lot of scratchbuilding. I never knew they made super versions. I look forward to the construction.
mam-07grublo
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy: Haha, just trying to parody those Engrish macho names that the Japanese like to use in anime. But looking at how Top Gun turned out, I wouldn't be surprised! spejic:Thanks! Was yours a Bandai boxing or one from another company like Imai or Nichimo? The Macross model kit scene from the 80's was rather confusing with kit makers reboxing kits from other manufacturers and so on. I actually bought one way back in the 90's and I enjoyed building it and when I saw this again on sale I snapped it up. And yeah I noticed they came with parts for a the gerwalk version too but no instructions on how to about it. Done up stuff recently, the wheels and cockpit have been completed. Untitled by df0084, on Flickr Untitled by df0084, on Flickr The usual weights are added to the nose... Untitled by df0084, on Flickr Depsite being an old kit, the Cockpit is surprisingly roomy and well detailed. With this done, the focus now moves to the wings and the leg assembly. spejic
Was yours a Bandai boxing or one from another company like Imai or Nichimo? I've built the 1/100 Imai, 1/144 Imai, and the 1/100 Bandai transformable, but the 1/72 Bandai is far superior to any of those. The one I have now is a 15th anniversary edition Bandai VF-1A, but I originally built the Revell imported versions of those kits (same plastic and metal, but slightly different decals with the Robotech names). Yours does have metal gear and hinge pieces, right? I didn't see them in any picture. Edited October 13, 2014 by spejic
mam-07grublo
Ah if you're talking about the metal gear and hinge kit, I have that one too, but this is not it. The one I'm building has its gear and hinges all in plastic and can only build up in Plane and gerwalk mode. So far, I've also built up an enemy Queadluun Rau Power armor from Bandai too here:
