mingwin
Hi! ...at last, i'm about to join this Group Build! ...been busy with GreatWar GroupBuild till now. (have one build there that is still in progress...not enough to keep me from joining in here!) my first project is the 1/48 Trumpeter MiG-21F-13, that i'll do BMF/NMF in the soviet marking. i have not the intention to put too much aftermarket stuff in that project. resin seat (that i already broke a small part (but i've manage to keep it safe elsewhere)), metal pitot, static dischargers and Begemot decals. (the metal part from "Master" are still in Poland by now...but they're already purchased) i've begin with "making" the proper place for the resin seat in the kit's tub, removing rails that shouldn't be there anyway. thinning a kit part that'll go behind the seat... and removing some plastic from the back wall of the pit, in order to make the two small windows that are supposed to be there. bashace
I've been on the fence about buying this kit, will be watching with interest. V/r Ron
ChippyWho
This will be a must-follow!
mingwin
thanks guys, it's encouraging to know some are interested in this WIP the grey of the cockpit is Akan A14. maybe not exactly what should be use... but close enough for me. i've used flory dark wash on the grey surfaces... and white wash on the black parts. when zoomed that much, it looks somewhat botched... but it looks OK in person! i've try to be inspired by the very few photos of the cockpit available (neither museum restore nor derelict subjects) to "decorate" the sidewalls... it was not easy as the kits pit detail are mostly, if not all and only, fictitious... at this chapter, even the Pavla SK-1 seat is not totally accurate... but close enough... and rather cheap. (mine still need to be repaired, as the top plate is not put back at its place...yet) Edited October 13, 2014 by mingwin
mingwin
i've replace the kit's decals of IP with some dial decals from Airscale. about half the dials are the good ones at approximately the right place... the others are "plausible" guess inspired by photos... i have also done a "dent" to the HUD, to mimic the real thing... so, as you can see... i'm inclined to do some modifications to the kit to improve it... as long as it require not too much efforts... or talent so, that's it for today! thank's for looking. comments are welcome! cheers Simon
dnl42
That's a nice looking cockpit!
supergru
I'm jealous for that fancy cockpit! Keep up the good work!
bashace
That pit has me fooled, looks exactly like the full scale one! Lol! V/r Ron
mingwin
Thank you guys for all those nice comments i'm rather satisfied of my pit... but i must say that the resin seat enhance the overall aspect of the pit greatly! so, this shows that with moderate efforts and talent, a nice-but-not-accurate cockpit can be made from this kit... same philosophy applies to the deck behind the pit... i added two small wires, paint them yellow... and voilà! improved without much efforts! goodnight gents! cheers Simon
mingwin
fuselage halves have been glue together... it doesn't line up perfectly... but not by much. very little sanding required...and not much rescribing neither. small amount of putty have been use because the nozzle part didn't fit perfectly. i think that this could have been avoid if i hadn't follow the instructions... one of the thing i really dislike in this kit engineering, is that you have to place the front landing gear while assembling the front wheel well... mingwin
have been spending the last hours decorating the wings with rivets... topside is now done... still have to do the underside... hope to complete that riveting job this week end... as always, comments are welcome thank you for looking. have a nice modeling time cheers Simon
bashace
That's a lot of rivets! What method are you using to accomplish that? V/r Ron
dnl42
I'm impressed! THAT was a LOT of work and it looks very clean. I've got a Lockheed Electra on my shelf that needs that type of lovin'. What did you use as a line guide?
mingwin
thanks guys it took me slightly more than 2 hours "riveting" those upper wings(and stabs) surfaces, i've use a good drawing reference that shows the rivets, try to follow it , using a graphite wood pen and clear ruler... i use RB Rivet-R rivet tool, with the 0,75 mm (rivet spaced) wheel on the wings (i've use the 1mm rivet wheel on some parts of the fuselage to rescribe some sand-away kit's rivets details) the result is rather neat on the wings as it has mostly flat and strong surface... riveting curved surface might be more complex. for those curved surface i use tamiya 6mm masking tape as guide for my riveting tool... but i didn't added as much rivets on the fuselage...just some in the engine area. mingwin
a little update on that build... now wings tail and stabs are glued to the fuselage, canopy have also been glued in place... canopy have been masked with Montex vinyl masks... i'm more use to Eduard's kabuki adhesive paper... it was cheapers than Eduard's masks... but if it was to do it again... the overall fit is correct... but not perfect... some putty have been required at a couple of places... but nothing to empty a putty tube! and as you can see, it's gonna be a rather fast build! i think that if i keep that pace, it should be completed in two weeks... (minus some metal pitot ...that have been ordered... but not shipped yet...) Edited October 19, 2014 by mingwin
ChippyWho
And you can see already what a fine looking aircraft the 21F-13 is. Fabulous work on the interior, and the outside looks equally good!
dnl42
Dang, you are flying! I'm still working on getting that vac canopy to fit...
mingwin
thanks again guys for your nice comments i really appreciate! hope your struggle to fit the Rob Taurus vac canopy will come to a happy end soon David! (that would be great news, as it would be a first, and would mean that with efforts, one can hope to have a more "bulbous" canopy on the academy kit!)
mingwin
here's where i am right now, this week... i have done a base coat of gloss black... that turns horrible... (i don't know why, what come out of my airbrush was...always too thick...or too thinned...never in between...or only for a few minutes...) so i have to sand/smooth the whole thing... tedious multiple gritt sanding...3000, 4000, 6000, 8000, 12000... after that it looks nice on most part... but only OK on others... i'll live with that! so i give a coat of polished aluminium to the whole thing... it looks really nice then... but very unrealistic! (i know for some that Trumpeter's kit is only a toy... but my hopes is to make it looks slightly better than that!) and now... i've masked the topside prior to a "dark aluminium" pass over some selected panels (based on photos evidences)
mingwin
and here's how it looks when unmasked... i have had to do numerous touch-ups on the polished aluminum areas as the masking tape have remove lots of tiny dots of paints here and there... doesn't matter if it doesn't looks absolutely perfect... still have other shades to add on numerous panels... but it will be for another day... hope you have enjoy the few seconds you have spend here! thanks you for looking (or following) my WIP thread. your comments are, as usual, welcome and appreciated! have a nice modelling time! cheers Simon
bashace
Looks fantastic Simon! On a side note, I use low tack Medical Tape for sensitive masking with great results. V/r Ron
dnl42
Simon, Very nice work on the BMF! While I'm confident to do specific metal areas, I'm not at all ready to tackle something like what you're doing.
mingwin
thanks for the compliments gents! i'll try to find that medical tape this week-end... hope it's available where i live (Québec city) ...thanks Ron for that info and David, it's my first serious BMF model yet (as it's the first time i'm adding that much rivets on anything) ...i guess i'm in a mood to try new thing and improve my modeling skills this year... Edited October 23, 2014 by mingwin
mingwin
i haven't found the 3M low tack medical tape in any of the 4 major drugstore near my home (and some are pretty big) ...so i have no choice than to continue the masking of that model with tamiya masking tape (but i won't stop searching that tape as i plan other NMF build in the near future) with all the inconvenient already meet yet... tape peel off the alclad finish when removing it (mostly on the "polished aluminium" painted area)...so i did a couple of touch ups... and all looks ok now. this week-end little update is to show the completion of the "base" aluminium colors completed... prior to clear coat (already started that task, underside first clearcoat drying while writing this...) i've tried to give an interesting metallic shades variation over a couple of panels... without getting too far... nor crazy... it's my first try at this! (at trying to get correct shade on the right panel, not the NMF thing, which i've try many avenue over the years, i must admit.) good shots are hard to get with such bright finish! the flash glare makes the variation harder to see than with natural light... i'll try to take some photos with daylight another time. that's all for today! can't wait to start put stencils on that model! maybe tomorrow... Pep
Love the metal finish on this! Can't wait to see how it turns out.
