A-6 Intruder artificial reef

Recommended Posts

No, but I sure would like to dive that reef. Or fish it. I would love to dangle a live minnow on a #4 circle hook above the intake of a sunken Intruder. I'll bet there are some serious grouper lurking in those A-6 nooks and crannies. :)/>

A far better end then as recycled beer cans, in my humble opinion.

I think it is the most stupid end for a jet, its even worse than Tomcats being used as razor blades!

That's truly a sad end to a tremendous aircraft. Breaks my heart too...

A couple of museum pieces, then recycling. The US generally does a good job of complying to environmental standards before committing ex-military equipment to nature. Everything is drained and cleaned, and all hazardous material gets stripped. I don't think they'll hurt their aquatic environment, maybe their purpose in jump starting coral reef growth will succeed.

Coral reefs are endangered habitats and giving the organisms a home to build on will likely have some positive effect.

In the Gulf of Mexico structure on the bottom means fish. I am not a scientist or an environmental specialist, and claim no knowledge of weighty matters.

But I do fish a lot down here and I am sure that those Intruders are now full of grouper and snapper and all kinds of interesting and amazing critters. Structure means fish.

Why not put them there.... they are Navy birds, after all. They are used to a little salt water.

Like when CV-34 was sunk to create an artificial reef (2006?), the first reaction is how sad to see her go to the bottom...but if you can't keep 'em afloat or in the air, 'burial at sea' is sort of in keeping with tradition, and like STEN8 says, helps out the marine life when around ten per cent of coral reefs have been lost due to various environmental issues.

Personally, weighing the environmental aspects, I'd rather see them rest in the deep to mark their history than end up as a soda can or part of a VW!

recycled into something worth while...

Another aircraft maybe, car parts... something, anything, just not dump all that metal into the sea!

So are you suggesting that creating a reef which will actually help drive the economy through fishing as well as scuba diving isn't worthwhile?

Found a Youtube video of the reef. Seems to be doing its job pretty dang well if you ask me.

Beautiful video - and where there are hand sized fish there are bigger fish that eat them - and so on and so on and so on. Down here the Marines dumped a whole load of old AMTRAKS ( I forget which model) off Anclote Key and there are some serious fish living there now. I know - I have almost caught several of them.

:)/>

Thanks for the cool video - I was sure it would be a good dive.

I'm going to have to agree with Harry on this one. While its sad to see several mighty Intruders on the ocean floor, its not like they dumped hundreds of them.... at least from the pic.... maybe eight or ten? The rest probably did go to be recycled, or to museums.

As a hard core Tiger Musky fisherman here in Utah, I can back Harry 100% on artificial reef creation. Any structure draws smaller organisms, which draw bigger organisms, which draw even bigger organisms... you get the idea. A lot of local crappie fisherman dump their old Christmas trees (with cinder blocks attached) in prime lake locations, which draw in the crappie. You can bet your life that when I find one with my fish finder, I put a GPS waypoint on it! Find the bait, and find the predators.... its that simple :thumbsup:/> Fred K

Fred,

What a great idea!!! I know just the lake and just the place this years' Christmas tree is destined for!

There is a rather large bass who has eluded me over the years, and I may have discovered the perfect way to ambush him.

Thanks for the tip - I won't even need a GPS.

Fish On!
