Emvar
Not a MiG guy..... I have seen them on the ground in Santa Clara Cuba from afar. So here goes. I have the Eduard MiG-21MF, which IP should be used the early or late type Do the Cuban MiGs have stencil data on them or just the National details? Which ejection seat would be used? Thanks Emil
ya-gabor
Good luck with your project. - If it is a MiG-21MF you are after then there is no question about the type of ejection seat. It is the KM-1M. - The instrument panel could be anything. Have you seen anyone (alive) who have taken photos of Cuban cockpits?? :D So I would go with a standard cockpit, there was not much chnage there, I dont think the Cubans had made any substancial changes to cockpits. - all aircraft in service would have stencil markings on them (some more, others less) but they will have them. All the best with your kit. Best regards Gabor The only place I knew where you had the chance to have a closer look at Cuban aircraft was the Air Force museum in the capital, but it was located in a very good part of the city and the area has now some private houses (if you look at satelite images) All the aircraft were moved to an Air Force base and no longer available to the public. This is my last information on it. Very sad since it was an excellent museum with lots of aircraft on show including a MiG-21 (will have to look, but I am not sure if it was an R or an MF). Jennings
Of all the photos I've ever seen of Cuban MiG-21s, the only photos I've ever seen of FAR MiG-21MFs have been natural metal airplanes. All of the camouflaged ones were MiG-21bis. They received some in the late 1970s or early 1980s that were in the factory sand and green camouflage, and in the late 1980s they were repainted into the garish blue & green scheme we often associate with them. I've never seen an MF in those colors however. Only the bis. I think the FAR tended to treat fighters as "disposable" assets, because they knew the Soviets would always make good on their losses in exchange for some sugar and cigars. As a result, the MF's they received didn't hang around very long in FAR service.
Emvar
I have a part of the Aztec Sheet All Castro's Cuban Raiders .... with the one option for Black 665 a MiG-21MF in the Blue Green scheme. Looks like I might have to source a stencil sheet.... probably Russian. No weapons just fuel tanks.... early cockpit and KM-1 Ejection seat. Thanks
Jim Barr
Unfortunately photos of 665 show it to be a bis. Regards Jim Barr
Jennings
The FAR uses sequential numbering. Any MiG-21 with a serial that starts with a 6 is a MiG-21bis. The MFs used serials in the 5xx range. I've probably got every FAR MiG-21 photo that's ever been published, and there are *very* few MiG-21MFs. All (every single one) I have is in natural metal with a red 5xx serial.
