crobinsonh
I have always been a fan of the F-106 Delta Dart even though I have never actually seen one in the flesh. I originally build the 1/72nd Hasegawa kit in 1980 and then ventured to the Monogram 1/48th F-106, I just could not face the scribing of all the wing panels. Along came the Trumpeter kit which I think is by their A team. This is certainly one of their nicer kits in terms of details, fit and general accuracy. One subject of discussion is the intakes. These are not quite right in either the Monogram or Trumpeter kit to my eyes when looking at a variety of references sources but I actually think the Trumpeter ones are closer and easier to improve. Here are the intakes after they have the lips thinned. And here they are after been immersed in boiling water and been flattened and has the top outward curve of the inane sanded to make it rounder. crobinsonh
A little more progress. I have decided to use the Blackbox Monogram F-106 cockpit set for the Trumpeter model. Whilst it is not a perfect fit it certainly fits better than most Aires resin does when it is for the right model! I have done some weathering already and have used a variety of grays to break up the all black side consoles. All weathering was using various shades of gray on the main tub and oil washes. All detail painting was using Vallejo paints. More soon. Edited November 11, 2014 by crobinsonh

Messersch
One of my favourites planes, the six..pending of your updates.
crobinsonh
Thanks for your comments. Whilst waiting for the cockpit to dry and the primer on the ejection seat I worked on the main U/C bay. Whilst not as detailed as the Monogram piece the moulding itself is much sharper. The advanced that 30 years difference brings. Will work on the missile bay and ejector seat next.
crobinsonh
More work on the Black box Ejection seat. Not quite finished - but getting there. I actually started painting this a couple of weeks ago but only just got to this point. All paint is Vallejo. Really wish I could have seen one of the beauties fly! crobinsonh
Some more progress on changes that need to be made to fit the Blackbox cockpit into the Trumpeter model. I also needed to do some more work on the intakes which I really made life hard for myself as I lost one of the Trumpeter back places. I therefore decided to slice, dice and fill and use two of the Monogram back plates instead. Life could have been so much easier!
crobinsonh
I also did some more work on the cockpit side panels and marked them out and glued them into position
crobinsonh
More work on the cockpit pieces from the Blackbox set. Very nicely detailed. There are some pieces left - stick, throttle quadrant etc that I still need to get to.
Liberator24
Phil Flory did a review of this kit last Friday. Nothing but great things to say. The biggest thing I enjoyed hearing from his reveiw is the absense of injector marks. He showed that there are no marks in places you dont want them i.e. the landing gear bays. This is gonna have to be a Christmas present to myself. Thanks for sharing such great pics and tips!! -Jim
volzj
Great start on the cockpit. Looking forward to seeing more.
crobinsonh
Finished the control stick and the throttle piece. I also finished the main missile bay. Lots more details to be added from the kit. Next onto the instrument panel and then final fitting and closing the fuselage.
crobinsonh
Calling the cockpit done. Used Mike Grant decals for the instruments. I sanded the back of the instrument panel to remove the pour block. After dry fitting I now think that perhaps it was meant to be there for strength! I have removed the control column and throttle handle until I have the fuselage together.

crobinsonh
Some more progress today on actually fitting the cockpit and getting some things closed up. Test fitting shows that apart from the changes needed for the instrument panel everything else seems to be ok
dehowie
Nice work on hour 106. Great to see your intake adjustments they look good. Be following your progress great stuff.
crobinsonh
More tricky bits - getting the intakes on and the fuselage together! Now whilst some of the fit issues are in having the BlackBox cockpit for the Monogram kit and using the Monogram splitter plates dues to me losing the Trumpeter ones - but the fit is still inconsistent. Managed to get a great fit on the top part of the fuselage but the bottom suffered.
crobinsonh
To start a couple of shots showing the wheel bays fitted and glued. Really nice fit - just lock in. Now the not so good. First an most unfortunate mould line. and This needs to be removed and the requite scribing tackled. Did I tell you - I hate scribing! and then onto some of the fit issues

crobinsonh
Hi,friend. I'm not sure, but it seems your froent wheel bay were in a wrong direction, the back is in front. :bandhead2:/> You are right - good spot. I will have to deal with that as the kit is well and truly glued together
crobinsonh
Some more progress on the F-106. Nose filled with the right amount of weight. Once glued on as with much of this kit the fit was not great. I therefore filled the joint with CA and sanded before re-scribing Using this amazing tool I bought in Tokyo Here is some of the nose panel lines re-scribed after sanding The other area I had to tackle was the fin. Again the fit to the fuselage was ok but needed fettling to get a better fit before filing - no Tamiya here.
